Assistant Director for Student Engagement for Racial Justice

The George Mason University, Student Engagement for Racial Justice team within The Center for Culture, Equity, and Empowerment seeks to hire two full-time Assistant Directors to work with campus-wide initiatives who will primarily serve students of color. About the Center: The Center for Culture, Equity, and Empowerment leverages programs and services focused on advocacy and direct student support to strengthen equity and inclusion at George Mason University. Our advising fosters opportunities for identity development, cross-cultural engagement, and inclusive learning communities, affirming the indivisible aspects of all our identities.

Our three areas: Student Access and Equity (SAE), Student Engagement for Racial Justice (SERJ), and LGBTQ+ Resources, serve as resources to those in the Mason Community who seek to meaningfully engage and interact with people with different identities and intersections to co-create an equitable campus environment.

About the Student Engagement for Racial Justice (SERJ) Team: The Student Engagement for Racial Justice (SERJ) team supports campus and student engagement for students who are historically underrepresented in higher education and their allies. Through the use of an intersectional lens, the team creates programs that advance the use of equitable practices in the university setting while providing personal identity and leadership development for all students on Mason's campus. The SERJ team is one of three teams within the Center for Culture Equity and Empowerment that support students at the Engagement, Enrichment, and LGBTQ Resource areas. Adjacent to this team is also a strong connection with a team based on Education as well as the Women & Gender Studies department that serves both academic and programmatic areas.

About the Position: The Assistant Director for Student Engagement and Racial Justice is responsible for the planning and management of student focused programs and initiatives that have a specific charge towards racial and ethnic development, affirmation, and support. This position reports to the Associate Director for Student Engagement for Racial Justice. The three Assistant Director positions work collaboratively and cross-functionally to achieve the goals of the unit.

The Assistant Director for Student Engagement and Racial Justice is also expected to maintain active in the engagement of students on campus relevant to the below constituency groups and includes but is not limited to: benchmarking, identifying trends in literature, and advocacy as relevant and appropriate to specific racial and ethnic constituency groups to aid in their success.

Responsibilities: Direct Student Support: * Provide advising and liaison support to identity-based Registered Student Organizations within the below student populations: (e.g. Asian Pacific American Coalition, Black, African, Caribbean Coalition, Indian Student Association, Hispanic Latino Leadership Alliance, Native American Indigenous Alliance, etc.); ** Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Student Communities ** Native American and Indigenous Student Communities ** Black and African Diasporic Student Communities ** South West Asian and North African (SWANA) Student Communities ** Hispanic/Latina/o/x Student Communities * Provide support that includes adequate advising for organizations and individuals, workshops, retreats, and as appropriate, referral to specific student services (e.g. Career Center, Counseling Center, Student Involvement).

Event Planning and Evaluation: * Engage in a programming portfolio that includes the following: ** Indigenous Peoples' Day ** Mason Night Market ** ONE APAC Summit ** Cultural Graduation Celebrations ** Bienvenida Latina ** Black Excellence Gala ** Cultural Heritage Month Events ** Various ad hoc events to meet student needs * Develop annual program outcomes, evaluations, and annual reporting for above stated programs, including relevant national, local, and campus-wide trends and needs for identified student populations. Alignment with learning and programming outcomes for the department as well as evaluations of those outcomes on a regular basis; * Manage the budget for programs included in the above portfolios and staffing, including purchasing of programming supplies, monitoring of work hours for supervised staff, as well as responsible management of funds. Included in budget management is seeking opportunities for external funding outside of the department from University Life, George Mason University opportunities, as well as those beyond the institution to expand and support work as relevant and approved by supervisor.

Departmental Expectations: * As a member of the Center for Culture, Equity, and Empowerment department, direct support for students from other underrepresented identities in higher education, included but not limited to, students who are first-generation, racial and ethnic heritage identities who constitute a minority, and gender and sexual orientations, represented in the multicultural and intersecting identities college students possess. Preparation to support these students include trainings required of all staff within the department. Examples are: ** Working with Students with Disabilities ** Working with International Students ** Safe Zone Training ** UndocuAlly Training * Serve on the Center for Culture, Equity, and Empowerment professional staff team. Attend staff meetings, small team meetings, large area meetings, and other meetings as assigned. Attend Center for Culture, Equity, and Empowerment signature events. Gain and maintain overall knowledge of Center for Culture, Equity, and Empowerment, University Life, and George Mason University. Serve on University Life and University-wide committees, including search committees, as assigned/approved by Supervisor; * Serve on the greater Center for Culture, Equity, and Empowerment team. Center professional staff team. Attend staff meetings, small team meetings, large area meetings, and other meetings as assigned. Attend signature events. Gain and maintain overall knowledge of Center, University Life, and George Mason University; * Serve on University Life and University-wide committees, including search committees, as assigned/approved by Supervisor; * Assist in the community building and development of identity-based alumni and faculty and staff networks in an effort to support students more broadly; * Other duties as assigned by Supervisor and/or Director.

Required Qualifications: * Master's degree in Counseling, Higher Education, or related field - completed by the first day of work listed on the offer letter; * Demonstrated experience with program and event planning, from ideation to execution; * Experience working with a diverse body of students, staff, and faculty.

Preferred Qualifications: * Two or more years of experience with Diversity, Equity, Justice and Inclusion initiatives and programs; * Understanding of and experience applying student development theories and/or student leadership development; * Experience using program and learning outcomes; * Experience with assessment, including knowledge of the assessment cycle and development and evaluation of outcomes.

Ability to articulate how theoretical constructs influence development; recognize how one's own development can bias one's perspective.
