About the Department

Student Health Services (SHS) provides health care services at George Mason University (GMU). SHS provides primary care services and health promotion to eligible students at GMU, including but not limited to initial and follow up assessment, history taking, physical exam of patients, utilization of differential diagnosis, appropriate interventions, consultations and referrals as indicated, and basic emergency treatment and stabilization. Staff provide services to faculty, staff, and visitors on an as needed basis.

About the Position:

The COVID Registered Nurse supports the clinic health care providers and nurses by performing COVID related duties. The position requires that the nurse provide staffing support in the clinic as needed. The nurse is responsible to notify students who are identified as potential COVID contact exposures, arrange for quarantine or isolation, provide COVID education, and follow up well-being calls during quarantine/isolation. The COVID Registered Nurse may support other ambulatory nursing health care services on an as needed basis. The COVID Registered Nurse may participate in COVID test sampling in support of the providers for diagnostic purposes.

Responsibilities:

COVID19 Testing and Sampling:

  • Performs curbside and/or mobile sampling/testing for COVID and non-COVID specimen;
  • Collects samples from patients for COVID19 screening in either role of Clean Sampler or Dirty Sampler;
  • Clean Sampler role handles all non-infectious surfaces throughout sampling process; stays at a distance from patient, attired in full PPE of protective gown, gloves, N95 or procedure mask, and face shield;
  • Demonstrates PPE and safety precautions at all times.


COVID19 Tracing and Ad Hoc:

  • Contacts patients with follow up as needed;
  • Works collaboratively with other university departments to facilitate testing and tracking results;
  • Coordinates students transfer to quarantine and isolation;
  • Provides outreach follow up to students by completing brief well-being checks via phone.


Additional Job Duties:

  • Clinic Skills and Triage (telephonic and in-person);
  • Delivers safe and effective triage to students in the SHS clinic for accurate appointments;
  • Utilizes approved protocols for triage and complies with documentation requirements as stated in the Triage policy and procedures;
  • Proficiency in all aspects of required clinical procedures, treatments, patient intake, patient flow, emergency preparedness, laboratory functions and IV placement and management;
  • Completes annual Competency review requirements.


Required Qualifications:

  • Experience and knowledge of unique needs of a college student;
  • Telephonic and In-Person Triage Skills;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Phlebotomy skills and IV training;
  • Knowledge of Electronic Medical Records;
  • Knowledgeable in anatomy and physiology;
  • Ability to build report with patients;
  • Compassionate and caring demeanor;
  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in Virginia or valid Multi-State License;
  • Healthcare Provider BLS certification;
  • Must be a graduate of an accredited diploma, associate or bachelor of science degree in registered nursing;
  • Demonstrated experience in Electronic Health Records, at least 1 year experience required;
  • Demonstrated clinical background with competence to complete COVID19 testing.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least one year of nursing experience in a hospital or health care setting in addition to clinical experience obtained while seeking a nursing degree;
  • At least one year of experience in a physician's office;
  • Demonstrated experience in specimen collecting, swabbing, or blood services preferable.
