Overview
Sully District Supervisor Kathy Smith’s Office with Fairfax County Government is seeking a Land Use Aide/Community Liaison who will specialize in topics relating to land use and urban design. Previous study or work experience in relevant fields is preferred but not necessary.

Background
Fairfax County is comprised of nine magisterial districts, one of which is the Sully District. Each district is represented by an elected official titled the District Supervisor. The nine District Supervisors and the Chair form the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.

The District Supervisors have offices located in their respective districts and staff members to assist constituents. The Sully District Office is a team of five to six with each staff member overseeing different subject areas. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Serves as the primary point of contact for land use-related inquiries for the Sully District Office
  • Advises the District Supervisor and constituents about the County’s latest land use policies and processes
  • Reviews land use applications to ensure they meet the needs of the community
  • Carries out various aspects of project management including scheduling meetings and keeping track of active cases
  • Interacts with members of the public to help resolve issues in the community.
  • Serves as a liaison between constituents and the County government.
  • Researches and organizes relevant information for Board members and staff
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to the One Fairfax Policy
  • Drafts and/or edits written materials, such as correspondence and summaries of information for public dissemination
Salary: $53,000 or negotiable and commensurate with education and experience. Promotional rules apply for current Fairfax County Government and Fairfax County Public Schools employees.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to a bachelor's degree in urban planning, political science, public policy, public administration, business administration, English, communications, or a related field.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Not applicable.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Familiarity with local governments and their legislative processes
  • Willingness to question the status quo with the goal of improving procedures
  • Ability to take initiative by implementing new ideas and taking on special projects
  • Previous experience in fields related to land use such as planning and zoning, urban design, etc.
  • Special interest or experience in topics such as affordable housing and community development
  • Ability to communicate effectively and provide excellent customer service.
  • Ability to multi-task and work independently
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite applications to include Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Familiarity with Customer Relationship Management Software (CRM)

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to the position must satisfactorily complete a criminal background check.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This position is primarily sedentary; may require lifting up to 15 pounds. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
