The supervisor will be leading the visitor services staff from Mt Vernon to Arlington (ARHO). ARHO has just undergone a complete rehabilitation of the site, new exhibits and research at are allowing the NPS to interpret the history of the Custis and Lee families; as well as the Syphax, Burke, Parks, and Gray families who were enslaved on the plantation. Responsibilities

  • Oversees planning, writing, developing and updating of all interpretive media.
  • Plans and maintains an effective public relations and outreach program.
  • Maintains productive external relationships to assist the park in achieving its goals and mission.
  • Represents park management as liaison and adviser with partners and outside organizations.
  • Plans, directs, schedules, coordinates and evaluates divisional activities.
  • Prepares long range interpretive and other park planning documents.
  • Establishes divisional policies, annual goals, objectives and priorities.
  • Advises management and makes recommendations on technical matters involving interpretation.
  • Develops partnerships with others for the purpose of maintaining and enhancing park constituents.
  • Manages park library, exhibits, museum collection and all historical and cultural artifacts.
  • Oversees the park's Volunteer Program.
  • Responsible for planning, budgeting, programming and tracking funds.

Time-in-grade requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement. Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal civilian employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
  • You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.


Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-08/05/2021-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 for each federal position listed as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of qualifying experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience . For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience.

For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected.

To qualify for this position at the GS-12 grade level, you must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: One year of specialized experience. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to, the following: supervising a park education and interpretive program; serving as a lead interpretive ranger, educator or teacher in a park, historic site, recreation, or conservation area; management or program specialist work involving the development and/or implementation of policy related to the education/interpretation programs in park areas or similar operations; planning park visitor services operations for diverse audiences; experience supervising subordinate staff, or other similar work. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to that of at least the GS-11 grade level in the federal service.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

There is no substitution of education for experience at the grade level(s) of this announcement.

Physical Demands: The work is frequently sedentary, but does require some physical exertion such as walking over uneven terrain, climbing stairs, standing, and bending in order to implement onsite inspections and program operations. The incumbent is required to operate a government owned motorized vehicle.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in an office setting and outdoors. Remainder of work involves trips to community meetings, meetings with interested organizations, regional and park meetings. Incumbent is required to wear NPS uniform. Incumbent is also required to maintain a valid driver's license.

  • Resume which includes a list of all significant jobs held and duties performed, dates specified in month and year format, and the resume must reflect either full-time or 40 hours per week.
