Summary

The Smithsonian Institution is a diverse museum and research complex dedicated to the increase and diffusion of knowledge. This position is located in the Smithsonian Institution, National Museum of the American Indian, Museum Learning and Programs, Interpretation Unit. The incumbent provides management and oversight as the lead advocate and supporter of the Unit's program supervisors and managers at the NMAI-DC and the NMAI-NY.

This position is OUTSIDE the bargaining unit.

Responsibilities

  • Supervision:
    • The incumbent oversees the establishment of goals, articulation of priorities, development of schedules and checklists, and the assignment of tasks. Monitors activities within unit to ensure that desired goals are achieved. Formulates goals and priorities to ensure most efficient use of personnel and available funds. Regularly reviews and evaluates overall performance to ensure that quality standards and established deadlines are met.
  • Operations:
    • Serves on the Museum Senior Management Team in collaborating together on the development of education policy and charts the educational direction for the NMAI. Much of this work will flow from existing to future visitor impact surveys and studies. This position requires mastery of oral and written communication of information to promote public and scholarly engagement with the Museum by presenting information about Native American history and culture both to a scholarly audience and to children and adults from the general public. It includes managing the Museum's education program which involves managing the staff, volunteers and the program's budget but does not require a professional degree in education.
  • Interpretation and Planning:
    • Defines and implements the criteria and methodology designed to foster, develop and enhance the visitor's educational experience and information retention. In communicating these points, takes into consideration audience expectations, knowledge, and pre-existing interests early in content development processes so that program themes, scripts, and documents are conceptualized accordingly. Relies upon audience development research and data. Develops and implements a comprehensive series of educational programs related to Museum exhibitions and public offerings. These include, but are not limited to, presenting guided activities in the Museum's exhibitions and public spaces and developing and presenting a wide array of educational workshops.
  • Strategic Planning:
    • Performs a major role in the Museum's overall strategic goals and priorities planning, ranging from audience engagement to education and exhibit goals, to establishing collaborative partnerships with Native and non-Native communities. Partners with Advancement staff to cultivate and sustain potential donors and sponsors for the purpose of encouraging support for the Museum. Maintains contact with other Museums and SI-wide contacts to explore the feasibility of interactions and alliances, acting in concert with the Associate Director for Museum Learning and Programs to carry out joint and reciprocal public programs within the means of the Museum's strategic goals and programs

Qualifications

Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation. Applicants who have the 1 year of appropriate specialized experience, are not required to have general experience, education above the high school level, or any additional specialized experience to meet the minimum qualification requirements.

For this position, applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, GS-12, in the Federal Service or equivalent.

For this position, specialized experience is defined as: demonstrated experience serving as a senior specialist on a team in a in a museum, cultural or historical organization in developing and implementing educational programming for a variety of audiences specifically about Native American history and culture.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid work on the same basis as for paid experience. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. To receive credit for such experience you must indicate clearly the nature of the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the average number of hours per week spent in such employment on your online resume.

Note: Your specialized experience must have been in a position(s) equivalent to duties for the occupation at the next lower grade level for the position being filled as defined by applicable Federal standards.

Education

This position does not have a positive education requirement. Education can not be used to substitute the specialized experience at the GS-13 grade level.
