Washington Metro is seeking a well-rounded and experienced land survey technician to lead survey field crews, perform survey computations, review property records, as well as prepare exhibits involving operational, system construction and joint development projects. Candidates must be proficient at using a variety of state-of-the-art survey instrumentation (e.g. robotic total stations, lidar scanners, and auto levels) and supporting software technologies. Utilizing the same, candidates must be experienced at performing a variety of survey tasks such as horizontal and vertical control surveys, structural as-built surveys and property boundary surveys. Much of this work will be night shift work with occasional day shift and overtime work requirements . A combination of formal education and practical job experience is preferred. Extensive job experience in lieu of education is acceptable.

Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering, at least four (4) years of professional experience in right-of-way, subdivision, engineering design and drafting, and all facts of working experience with (CAD) is required.

Or, an equivalent combination of post high school education and more than six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in right-of-way, subdivision, and engineering design and drafting, and all facets of work experience with (CAD).

Certified Survey Technician (CST) by the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS) within the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ACSM) or possess a current surveyor license in the District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia.

License:

Possession of, or the ability to obtain a valid District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia motor vehicle operator's license issued from the jurisdiction of residence.

Job Summary/Duties:

Under general supervision, this is a technical engineering position involving technical surveys, engineering design and production, review and evaluation of drawings (calculations, and specifications) with hands-on use and application of state-of-the-art (CAD ) software and basic engineering and survey computer programs. Conducts and leads various types of field surveys, and reduces, compiles various types of survey data into final format and drawings. Prepares engineering design and construction documents.

Prepares, using (CAD ), engineering and survey software computer programs, designs and drawings for assigned projects. Reviews survey results for technical accuracy. Ensures adequacy and adherence to engineering practices and principles for new facilities and compatibility with existing facilities.

Compiles and tabulates written and digital survey Field notes; performs calculations using the more advanced formulas (generally not related to what if analyses) for generating final survey results with associated supporting software modules and peripheral computer equipment. Draws sketches and plans developed from survey notes using (CAD) software systems. Maintains survey records, notes, files, worksheets, and related contract documents.

Provides technical expertise in state-of-the-art computer-aided design (CAD) technology and equipment, such as scanners, plotters, laser printers, and LAN hardware and software. Assists staff members in using (CAD) to prepare drawings, graphic presentations, scanning, and plotting techniques.

Maintains digital files on assigned computer equipment to assure use of correct and current data files. Transfers data files between office (e.g., laptop, personal computer) and field (i.e., electronic notebook) equipment.

Reads and interprets plans and specifications. Executes and leads required quality assurance survey checks on assigned projects to check the accuracy of the survey crew's work and verify measurements prepared by contractors. Verifies that measurements meet quality assurance standards/are within acceptable limits.

Reviews and prepares a variety of technical engineering reports covering civil requirements and designs. Reviews designs, specifications and detailed site surveys of facilities for the transit system.

Using (CAD) and other programs, prepares horizontal and vertical alignments and other civil, track work and right-of-way designs. Prepares contract documents as required.
