Temporary Waterfront Laborer I

The City of Alexandria is located in northern Virginia and is bordered by the District of Columbia (Potomac River), Arlington and Fairfax counties. An Overview

A Temporary Waterfront Laborer I performs general, unskilled, manual work of a routine nature tasks for the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities. The duties outlined will require physical vigor and the ability to follow given specific work instructions. A person in this position will be under supervision and will often assist Laborers II and III and Equipment Operators I in various tasks. Many of these tasks will be time sensitive. Assignments are outlined in detail by a supervisor, standard procedures are followed, and work is inspected periodically for safety and economy of operation. A candidate selected for this temporary part time position would be expected to work varying hours per week base on the business need, not to exceed 1500 hours per calendar year.

What You Should Bring

Your ability to work in both outdoor and indoor settings. You should be able to perform, with or without accommodation, medium to heavy work requiring the exertion of fifty (50) pounds of force occasionally, up to twenty (20) pounds of force frequently, and up to ten (10) pounds of force constantly to move, lift and push objects. Your work will require climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, pushing and pulling. You will be subject to outside environmental conditions, including extreme cold, extreme heat, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.

The Opportunity
  • Assists with winterization on all water systems e.g., pools, irrigation systems, fountains, hose bibs;
  • Maintain cleanliness and order in and around rest rooms, shelters, benches, trash receptacles, signage and playgrounds;
  • Maintains, grooms and performs routine maintenance on athletic fields and outdoor parks;
  • Makes minor repairs on or paints equipment, special projects or litter cans;
  • Operates industrial equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks in stocking materials in warehouse;
  • Operates small hand tools such as drills, saws, blowers, grinders, shop vacs, and weed eaters;
  • Picks up litter, empties and power washes litter cans, oil spills and graffiti on City right of ways;
  • Posts no parking signs in areas needing cleaned. Assists in cleaning around vehicles with sweeper operator;
  • Provides special event support, community day clean ups by cleaning before, during and after events or assisting with setup and breakdown of equipment;
  • Shovels snow, rakes leaves, cuts grass, works hose on leaf truck, picks up bio-degradable bags;
  • Works in the shop area making minor repairs, stocking materials and cleaning equipment;
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

Ability to read and write and carry out simple written instructions; should have at least one year experience in related work; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must be able to collect refuse from back of a refuse truck; ability to use common hand tools; ability to follow oral instructions; ability to perform heavy manual labor daily; and must be able to work in all kinds of weather conditions.

Note: Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license as may be required by some positions to operate some equipment in this class.

Preferred Qualifications

Ability to understand safety hazards and to ensure safety practices are followed; ability to follow daily work documentation and reports.

This position requires successful completion of a criminal records background check and drug screening prior to employment.
