Summary

This position is locate in the Design Office, Center for Exhibits and Interpretation, Office of the Librarian.

The position description number for this position is 413666.

The salary range indicated reflects the locality pay adjustments for the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan area.

The incumbent of this position will work a flextime work schedule.

This is a non-supervisory, bargaining unit position.

Responsibilities

Incumbent is required to select, and create artwork to communicate specific points, passages, or summaries of information in numerous formats and visual materials, including both virtual and print.

Confer and collaborate with Library of Congress customers, Director of CEI, Printing Specialists, and Printing Officer on project work, design, layout, and production methodology. Works from notes, rough sketches, computer files, brief information and instructions provided by customers and/or supervisor and translates those ideas and suggestions into a final product. Consults with Library staff at all levels to determine the best means and the specific visual material that will best represent and express the information or message. Makes recommendations to customers the best method of production and/or duplication and installation of final product.

Effectively selects and utilizes the proper graphic design, desktop publishing, web page design, and general business productivity software and other graphic devices and equipment in the completion of job requests. Accurately completes assignments in accordance with written or oral instructions in a timely manner and is able to work under pressure in meeting deadlines.

Remains abreast of evolving publishing technology and learns the capabilities of new design and layout methods; advises on the usefulness and applicability of new technology to the publishing needs of the Design Office. Maintains expert knowledge of electronic software used in the production of graphic design and layout, electronic publishing, Apps, web design, and emerging technologies.

Determines printing specifications and prepares art files for outside printing contracts. Carries out proof and/or press sheet inspections when necessary.

Assists in maintaining an adequate inventory of supplies for the production of visual aids in the Design Office.

Serves in an ad hoc capacity in conjunction with the in-house Print Shop and other Printing Management staff, assists as needed. Consults with appropriate supervisor establishes production schedules and ensures adherence. Coordinates with other Design Office staff to ensure necessary functional coverage in all areas.

Applicants must have had progressively responsible experience and training sufficient in scope and quality to furnish them with an acceptable level of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision.

Ability to research and apply knowledge of current trends and emerging technologies and techniques in the design of multimedia and graphics products.**

Ability to use software to design and create multimedia and graphics products.**

Ability to manage multimedia and graphic design projects.

Ability to promote multimedia and graphic design services.

Ability to analyze and test the integration of multimedia and graphics products with publishing and web applications.

Ability to communicate in writing.

Ability to communicate effectively other than in writing.
