Summary

This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration, Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network
(VISN 6), Hampton VA Medical Center (VAMC), in Hampton, VA. The position is organizationally aligned under Environmental Management Service (EMS). This position serves in the Grounds Section in the Environmental Management Service at the VA Medical Center in Hampton, VA.

Responsibilities

Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license.

Operate field type tractors and mowers with attached tow and push type equipment; backhoes; forklifts; lawn mowers;
grounds maintenance vehicles; weed eaters; blowers; chainsaws; hedge trimmers; various portable generators; spreaders;
edgers; shovels; and other equipment related to grounds maintenance. Equipment may be direct drive, hydraulic or
mechanically operated and controlled.

Operates snow plows, snow blowers, chemical spreaders, shovels and other related equipment to remove snow and ice
from sidewalks, roadways and parking lots.

Safely operates GSA and VA owned vehicles such as sedans, station wagons, vans (includes wheelchair and 15 passenger
vans), trucks (dump truck) up to 26,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight, as well as other equipment necessary to carry out
the functions of the Grounds section.

Observes and enforces safety regulations as it pertains to using hand tools, power equipment, motorized equipment, motor
vehicles and machinery to prevent injury to self and others.

Inspects equipment and vehicles during use to ensure they are in safe operating condition. Must possess a general knowledge of equipment and automotive mechanics, and first echelon in order to identify and report problems for necessary repairs.

Performs daily duties in all weather conditions, which includes, but is not limited to lifting of heavy freight, equipment and
supplies. Must be in good physical condition and have good coordination of eyes, hands and feet, as well as good vision
and depth perception.

Consistently communicates and treats customers while supporting VA missions (i.e., veterans, their representatives, visitors,
and all VA staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner.

Other duties as required.

Work Schedule: Seasonal May through September (Spring-Summer) Mon-Fri 06:00 to 2:30PM and October through April (Fall-Winter) Mon-Fri 07:00AM to 3:30PM. Maybe required to work Federal Holiday and weekends.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: Daily duties include climbing into and out of vehicles in all weather conditions, lifting of heavy freight, equipment, supplies, etc.; climbing stairs, loading/unloading equipment and supplies. Incumbent must be of good physical condition and have good coordination of eyes, hands, and feet, as well as good vision and depth perception. Incumbent must be mentally alert to traffic hazards and dangers of the highway. Physical efforts require lifting, climbing, stooping, and working in cramped positions possibly lasting for long periods of time.

Working Conditions: The majority of work is performed outdoors. Incumbent is exposed to all types of weather including extreme heat and cold, wind, rain, ice, and snow. Incumbent is exposed to dust and fumes often requiring use of dust masks and/or respirators and falls when using hand tools, ladders, chain saws, or any type of motorized equipment. Incumbent is subject to cuts, bruises and minor electrical shacks in addition ta physical discomfort and injuries associated with the application of fertilizer, herbicides and fungicides as utilized in agricultural applications Incumbent has the potential of being exposed to patients with all types of diseases, colds, and viruses while transporting in closed vehicles. Universal infection control precautions shall be practiced.
