Do you want to help make the world a better place with your communication skills and in-depth knowledge of the Asia-Pacific region? We are seeking a two-year fixed term Communications Officer located in one of our hub offices: Berlin, Brussels, London, New York or Washington D.C. to develop strategies, cultivate, draft and edit all forms of content from blogs to op-eds, identify and pitch stories, coordinate regional communications, and quickly turn around media inquiries working closely with the Open Society Asia-Pacific Regional Office.

The Communications team plays a central role in the work of the Open Society Foundations by coordinating and strengthening the public presence of the global network and by helping to advance relevant issues. Communications works to raise Open Society’s public profile by promoting the network’s many noteworthy achievements as well as responding to attacks from opponents of open society around the world. The department employs media outreach, digital, social media, publications, and internal communications to assist dozens of Open Society foundations and programs in their communications efforts.

As the Communications Officer will be working closely with the Asia-Pacific Regional Office, the successful candidate will need to have excellent English language and writing skills and professional knowledge of one or more of the regional languages such as Mandarin, Hindi, Malay, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Burmese, and Vietnamese. 

As a Communications Officer at Open Society, you will for:

  • Develop and disseminate an overall communications strategy and key messages for advancing our work in priority areas in the region as well as contributing to individual foundation strategies
  • Identify possible communications and media risks and develop strategies to mitigate them 
  • Identify and position key Open Society Foundations messages, people, and grantees in print, online, broadcast, radio and other media
  • Draft and edit Op-Eds, letters-to-the-editor, and press releases
  • Manage the production and deployment of digital and print content for an Open Society issue and see it through from beginning to end
  • Develop and conduct Communications trainings for program staff, leadership, and grantees.

What we are looking for:

  • In-depth knowledge of the Asia-Pacific region and open society issues
  • Over 7 years of relevant communications experience including but not limited to journalism OR experience as a communications professional in the not-for-profit or private sector
  • Excellent English-language writing and editing ability, as well as verbal skills; professional knowledge of one or more of the regional languages such as Mandarin, Hindi, Korean etc. is preferred
  • Proven skills in the development of communications strategies and plans
  • Excellent skills in writing for and pitching to media
  • Social media and digital expertise

  • Willingness to travel extensively for work
  • Substantial knowledge of organizational and project management
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, and solve problems independently or collaboratively a needed
  • Diplomatic manner and ability to adapt to a range of cultures and experiences in interacting with program management, colleagues at all levels, contacts, and the public.
