* Videos Videos * Duties Help Duties Summary You will participate in and oversee matters requiring action by the principals in the Office of the Administrator. You will organize and participate in senior level activities to develop policy positions and to resolve conflicts. Learn more about this agency Responsibilities As a Supervisory Special Assistant, you will: * Lead and/or serve on ad hoc coordinating committees as a representative of the principal. Prepare documentary materials for use and/or approval by the Administrator, Deputy Administrator, and/or Executive Director in appearances before Congressional committees, State and local groups, and Executive Branch interagency meetings. * Participate in and carry out a variety of sensitive assignments that are usually of a complex nature cutting across several units for FHWA. You are required to have a considerable depth of knowledge of FHWA and its interrelationship with the Department of Transportation, State, and local transportation programs. You will propose and take appropriate action to handle issues and resolve matters independently, or without direct participation from the principal or other staff members. * Provide assistance to Leadership Team in completing action items of interest to the principal. Serve as liaison between program/field offices and the principal by anticipating problems; working toward acceptable resolutions, such as suggesting alternative actions; drafting correspondence and speeches; and developing presentations. * Oversee and/or perform administrative work in support of the principal to accomplish the Agency's missions and the Administrator's priorities. You may work independently or as a part of a team, and sometimes extended hours to provide a wide range of support, which includes scheduling appointments, facilitating communication, prepare and compose documentary and correspondence materials, tracking projects, and coordinating travel arrangements. * Supervise the activities of the HOA administrative staff. Manage the day-to-day operations of the HOA Office. The ideal candidate for this position will provide leadership and knowledge of highway transportation program processes, governing statutes, and regulations for industry and government perspectives. The individual must be a self-starter who can handle a wide range of administrative activities at any given time and work independently or as part of a team in a fast-paced environment with extended hours. The individual must be organizationally and politically savvy and possess strong time management and organizational skills, and written and verbal communication skills in support of the Administrator's priorities. Qualifications To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must meet the specialized experience qualifications for the grade at which you are requesting consideration. To qualify for the Grade 15, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equal or equivalent to the GS-14 and it must include: * Experience providing leadership to program areas or division offices. * Experience with program management principles and practices relating to national surface transportation programs. * Experience leading and managing the activities of a team or staff.
