General duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Responsible for providing consultation in Hematology-Oncology, both for diagnosis and treatment in the inpatient or outpatient settings.
  • Expected to share attending call responsibilities with other Hematology-Oncology specialists in covering some nights, weekend and holiday calls. The physician will round with the team of fellow(s) and medical student(s) in regards to inpatient settings.

a) When requested, may be required to act as the Chief, Hematology/Oncology in his/her absence.
b) Provides guidance and support to the nurse practitioners and/or physician assistants assigned to Medical Service.
c) Provides guidance and supervision for the medical students and residents (interns, residents, and/or fellows) as required.
d) Chairs, participates as an active member, and/or attends medical center committees as assigned by the Chief, Hematology/Oncology, the Chief, Medical Service and/or the Chief of Staff. The incumbent may be required to act as the delegated committee member for the Chief, Hematology/Oncology in his/her absence.
e) May be required to adjust schedules on short notice to meet changes in prescribed workloads and deadlines.
f) Participates in facility programs designed to enhance and improve the delivery of patient care services, such as Quality Management; chart reviews; Hematology/Oncology performance measure reviews; Radiation/Oncology contract oversight; Cancer Committee; etc.
g) Demonstrates commitment to high quality customer service, including specific measures identified as performance goals by the Medical Center.
h) Adheres to all information security and privacy measures set by VHA and the Medical Center.
i) Annually develops and evaluates professional and personal goals.

Clinical :
a) Provides patient care to Veterans in the areas of Internal Medicine and Hematology/Oncology in the form of primary care and/or consultative care. Incumbent provides medical diagnostic evaluation and initial assessment of patients which includes focused histories, physical examinations, and pertinent laboratory investigations.
b) Demonstrates sound decision-making skills, both clinical and administrative, which bring credit to the profession and serve to enhance the distinctive and contributory role of physicians.
c) Facilitates the delivery of appropriate patient care in collaboration with other health professionals, Medical Center staff, and management.
d) Orders and interprets appropriate diagnostic tests necessary to complete required evaluations.
e) Engages in discussions of treatment plans with patients, family members, and other involved parties as appropriate, while following COBRA and HIPAA guidelines.
f) Participates as a peer reviewer when requested.
g) Participates in the rotation as a third call attending.
h) Exhibits leadership in suggesting, and, with approval by the Chief, Hematology/Oncology, instituting changes in patient care programs based on current concepts and findings from research and practice guidelines. Keeps informed of developments in the management and treatment of diseases and illness through continuing medical education, both formal and informal.
i) Coordinates patient care with additional consultants, including contracted Radiation/Oncology staff and/or other resources outside of the Medical Center, as deemed appropriate.
j) Supports the safety, occupational health, and fire protection program by the application of approved standards, regulations, practices, and work methods.
k) Completes all medical record documentation in CPRS within prescribed timeframes.
l) Utilizes problem solving methodologies to resolve problems impacting clinical or administrative performance.
m) Plans, implements, and evaluates care based on the age specific requirements of the patient.
n) Makes decisions based on professional standards

Academic :
a) Participates in the formal education of residents, fellows and medical students by presenting teaching rounds, lectures, and conferences, etc.
b) Participates in evaluations and grading sessions for medical students and trainees assigned to their service.
c) Demonstrates to and trains residents, fellows and medical students on relevant medical procedures that are required to provide optimal patient care.
e) Meets scholarly activity requirements, including participation in scientific investigations, peer-reviewed publication and national professional organizations, as required.

Research (as required/appropriate):
a) Supports the Medical Center research mission.
b) Assists in conducting studies regarding treatment modalities, outcomes, and other aspects of
patient care when appropriate.
d) If involved in an ongoing research project, abides by all VHA and medical center regulations, policies and procedures governing research protocols.
e) Encourages participation in clinical research with other staff members. Promotes and facilitates research amongst the medical students, residents, and fellows comprising the Salem VAMC affiliated training programs.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience: Board certified in Hematology/Oncology

Physical Requirements: Must be able to physically and mentally perform the duties in a hospital setting under normal and emergent conditions. Moderate lifting, 15-44 pounds, straight pulling/pushing up to 1 hour; reaching above shoulder; both hands required, standing up to 4 hours per day; kneeling up to 1 hour per day; near/far vision correctable; hearing aid permitted.
