Summary

Education and length of practice are considered through a formal pay-setting process to determine the final compensable salary (Base Pay + Market Pay)

Duties include provision of emergency and urgent treatment to patients that have illnesses within the scope of practice of Emergency Medicine, General Internal Medicine, and Family Practice. Consulting services will be utilized as necessary.

Responsibilities

Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Emergent intake, patient assessment, patient history, physical examinations, ordering diagnostic and therapeutic tests/studies, emergent resuscitation, and management of difficult airways.
  • The Physician interprets ECGs and selected radiographic tests; performs invasive procedures for which incumbent is credentialed; initiates consults as well as referrals after discharge from the Emergency Department, and prescribes medications/supplies in accordance with VA policy and VA formulary and State regulations.
  • Perform assessments/examinations on initial encounter with unscheduled, emergency and new patients.
  • Coordinate patient treatment plans (involve Primary Care and specialists as appropriate).
  • Order appropriate diagnostic tests as necessary to complete the evaluation.
  • Admit patients to the hospital or discharge them from the ED with appropriate follow-up.
  • Perform medication reconciliation with all ED discharged patients.
  • Participate in Quality Assurance, chart reviews, and support applicable ED performance measures.
  • Coordinate patient care with consultants as deemed appropriate.
  • Provide Attending physician oversight to residents, mid-level staff members as applicable
  • Attend physician staff meetings
  • The selectee must demonstrate continuing effort to keep abreast of new medical developments and medical literature, and must meet facility and licensing requirements for continuing medical education (CME).
  • Follow the processes established by the Section Chief of ED, guidelines, MCM and policies of VHA
  • Provide effective delivery of outpatient care while meeting and exceeding compliance standards.
  • Participate in Quality Assurance, chart reviews, and support applicable ED performance measure.
  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned.

Work Schedule: Variable tours of duty which include weekends and holidays, which could be 7AM-7PM; 7PM-7AM; 11AM-11PM; rotating tour of duty; will be discussed during the interview process

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Licensure: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Residency: Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Board Certification: Physicians are generally not required to be board certified for employment in VA; however, three circumstances in VA require physician board certification:
  • (1) If the position being filled is required to be a supervisor for medical students or physician residents (including fellows), the LCME, ACGME or AOA standards requiring a particular board certification credential will apply.
  • (2) If the position being filled will have faculty status with an affiliated medical school (for example, in joint recruitments with affiliated medical schools), then a medical school requirement for board certification will apply to the jointly recruited position.
  • (3) If the position being filled is required to be board certified by virtue of specific VHA policy (for example, as director of a cardiac catheterization laboratory or Director of Clinical Laboratory Medicine), then VHA policy requiring board certification will apply.
  • English Proficiency: Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical Requirements: Physical requirements outlined below.

Physical Requirements: The physician should be physically and mentally capable to perform the duties of the position including examinations, formulate the diagnosis and treatment plan and educate residents. Physical activities include sitting, standing (up to 4 hours) walking (up to 2 hours), heavy lifting (45 pounds or over), reaching above the shoulder, and repeated bending. The incumbent should be emotionally and mentally stable; and capable to perform the duties of the position.
