Job Description: Focus on scientific research studies for the American Red Cross Biomedical Headquarters as well as vendor-sponsored studies. These studies are usually 3-4 months in duration, requiring excellent small group communication/project skills and knowledge of industry best-practice scientific/analytic skills. The scope varies by study; the ideal candidate should be comfortable working independently and ability to work in a small-group team setting. The selected candidate will need to also be flexible to work outside of normal business hours depending on the needs of a particular study. Unlike a hospital position, this role will offer a variety (based on study), is salaried, and requires minimal evening/weekend work (based on study). Our paid training is extensive - initial training runs 6-8 weeks. After formal training, the selected candidate will be working under mentor supervision until fully comfortable/competent in applicable American Red Cross processes/procedures (usually 1-2 years). Responsibilities: Participates in complex research or development studies both independently and in collaboration with research teams of new procedures, instrumentation, and technologies. Conducts experiments with a high level of independence. Maintains accurate and detailed records of experimental results and analyses. Reviews progress and evaluate results. Maintains laboratory equipment and operating procedures; contributes to process improvements. Unit-specific responsibilities with the scope of the job. Centered around blood banking and transfusion medicine. Qualifications: Relevant BS degree in a scientific discipline and a minimum of three years of relevant laboratory work experience. Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Biology, Chemistry, or relevant field. Experience in the area of blood banking, hematology, flow cytometry, or transfusion medicine is desirable. Proficiency in laboratory methods, attention to detail, ability to recognize discrepancies in results. Good documentation skills, well organized, ability to communicate effectively.
