Job Summary: This position is a member of the SMC Division Compensation & Benefits team. This position is responsible for ensuring that employees are paid accurately and on time. Payroll team is responsible for the preparation and processing of 13 weekly, biweekly and semi-monthly payrolls for over 1,800 employees on the ADP / ProBusiness payroll platform. In addition to the day-to day payroll processing this position evaluates current systems, and recommends and develops operating efficiency improvements. Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Calculate gross and net pay amounts (eg, salary, wages, overtime, differentials, bonuses, deferred compensation, benefits, tax withholdings, deductions, payroll liabilities, etc.). Coordinate the proper flow of employee data (ie new hires, transfers, rate changes, terminations, etc.) between human resources and payroll. Maintain employee records; ensure that employee changes are entered correctly and made on a timely basis; reviewing changes for proper authorization. Manage direct deposits and W-4 information. Execute time and attendance processing and interface with payroll. Reconcile payrolls prior to transmission. Transmit payrolls to an outside vendor for processing. Provide support to the Finance Department including month-end journals and preparation/distribution of detailed reporting integrating to the financial system. Develop in depth understanding of payroll database to be able to create ad-hoc reports on demand. Understanding of proper taxation of employer paid benefits. Process correct garnishment calculations and compliance. Generate third party payments. Perform compliance for unclaimed property payroll checks. Process accurate and timely year-end reporting when necessary (ie W-2, W-2c, etc.). Assist employees in registering for or resetting access to online pay stubs. Support all internal and external audits related to payroll. Assist with payroll SOX compliance. Monitor and manage payroll legislation compliance. Answer questions from employees and supervisors regarding payroll matters. Process employee verification of employment requests. Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree required. Certified Payroll Professional designation preferred. Five plus years of Payroll / Accounting experience. In-depth knowledge of SOX compliance. Advanced knowledge of payroll best practices. Required Skills: Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise extreme discretion. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to meet all deadlines. Strong knowledge of federal and state regulations. Excellent PC skills including proficiency in Excel and payroll software. Strong mathematical skills. Strong work ethic and team player. High degree of professionalism. Strong interpersonal (verbal and written) communication skills. Ability to communicate with various levels of management. Excellent decision-making, problem-solving, and analytical skills. Strong organizational, multi-tasking, and prioritizing skills. This position requires use of information or access to production processes subject to national security controls under US export control laws and regulations (including, but not limited to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and the Export Administration Regulations (EAR)).
