We are seeking multiple bilingual ESL Tutors to support the school’s mission by preparing our adult immigrant students to realize their dreams while strengthening our community and economy. The ESL Tutor accomplishes this by providing excellent in-person and/or distance learning instruction that supports students’ diverse educational backgrounds, learning styles, and English language abilities. The responsibilities of the position include assisting the ESL teacher in instructing students in level- appropriate listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. The ESL Tutor will use a variety of student- centered instructional techniques to respond to the student’s individual needs, by creating materials specific to the assigned level, selecting supplemental materials from textbooks, and utilizing the teacher’s class syllabus as a reference point for writing daily lesson plans to directly address all student needs. Additionally, the role of the ESL Tutor requires the management of key data points.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with instructing students in survival skills in English and prepare students to advance to the next level

  • Work with the tutee to develop a tutoring plan that fits the student’s individual needs

  • Prepare tutoring sessions to ensure the tutee’s academic development

  • Assess the tutee’s progress throughout the tutoring sessions

  • Follow teacher referrals and plan accordingly for the student’s needs and report student’s activity/progress in the SIS

  • Assist students in improving academic achievement by meeting with them regularly to clarify learning problems and work on study skills to promote independence in learning

  • Prepare handouts and activities

  • Communicate effectively with each of the teachers and paraeducators who have made student referrals

  • Help teachers in class during testing, semester transitions, and when tutees are absent

  • Participate in tutor training and professional development sessions

  • Substitute when teachers are unable to be in the classroom using their emergency sub plans

  • Help administer TEAAL and CASAS makeup exams in the tutorial suite

  • Proctor for exams at the beginning and end of semesters

  • Perform other duties as requested and in keeping with achieving outstanding school, academy, student, and course objectives.

Requirements:

  • Associate Degree in Education or a related field, BA degree preferred with a minimum of two years of related experience or the appropriate combination of education and experience

  • Bilingual fluency Amharic/English required

  • Demonstrate self-motivation, continual learning, and taking initiative

  • Practice professional and effective interpersonal communication skills

  • Able to work independently or with others in a team approach

  • Experience in ESL and Adult Education preferred

  • Demonstrate knowledge and competence in Adult Education

  • Must be flexible and able to make adaptations to meet the academic needs of students with different learning skills and challenges

  • Work comfortably with people from diverse backgrounds

  • Excellent organizational skills and timely completion of tasks

  • Fluently speak, read, and write in English

  • Knowledge and experience using online learning tools (Zoom, Remind, G-Suite, etc.), and

    Microsoft Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)

  • Full-time - Mon – Fri 9:00 am – 12:00 pm & Mon – Thurs 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm Part-time - Mon – Fri 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
