This career/career-conditional permanent full-time position is located in Shenandoah National Park, in the Maintenance Division.

Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will be paid if the selectee lives outside of the local commuting area and is otherwise eligible for reimbursement of relocation expenses in accordance with the Federal Travel Regulation.

Responsibilities

This position will serve as a heavy mobile equipment mechanic performing maintenance, repair, servicing and overhaul work on automobiles, trucks, tractors, heavy equipment, attachments and other vehicles and equipment. Makes repairs that can be accomplished by removing, replacing, adjusting, overhauling or cleaning defective parts or components. Requires the completion of safety and operation inspections for vehicles and equipment. This position also requires preparation of monthly reports, requisitions for supplies and parts, job reports and vehicle labor and parts forms. Reports may be prepared using various commercially available software programs.

POSITION LOCATION: Shenandoah National Park is located in Virginia, approximately 90 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. The park consists of approximately 197,000 acres of land, including 80,000 acres designated as wilderness. It also contains 105 miles of Skyline Drive and 101 miles of the Appalachian Trail. Annual visitation is around 1.3 million, which has direct and extensive economic impact on the surrounding area (eight counties and nine municipalities). The park's natural, cultural and recreational resources are of vital interest to local and regional businesses, political leaders, conservation and outdoor recreation organizations, and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.

  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use. This is based on the Commercial Driver's License requirement.
  • Required to possess a valid State Driver's License. Required to obtain Class A Commercial Driver's License within 18 months of employment.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to occasionally work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • Government housing is not available.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You may be required to occasionally travel overnight away from home; You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or
  • (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.


Qualifications

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Job Qualifications System for Trades and Labor Occupations (X-118-C) will be used in determining applicants' qualifications.     Physical Demands: Physical effort is active, requiring walking, standing, lifting, stooping, and working cramped positions. May work on top of, under, and in tight compartments of vehicles in cramped or awkward positions. Performs strenuous work while standing, lying, or sitting. Frequently lift and carry items.
    Working Conditions: This position requires work indoors and outdoors. Must be capable of working satisfactorily in adverse conditions of rain, snow, and in high insect density. Work is performed in areas that are frequently dusty, dirty, and greasy and is exposed to solvents, noxious gases and fumes that could result in burns, infections, and cuts. When inside, frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and noise which is difficult to talk above. When outside, sometimes work is in inclement weather, mud or snow, and/or wet or icy areas. Both inside and outside, workers are exposed to irritations and discomfort from dust, grease, heat, and fumes.
