Summary

Serves as an Aerospace Engineer in the Space Mission Analysis Branch ( https://sacd.larc.nasa.gov/smab/) of the Systems Analysis and Concepts Directorate (SACD), providing systems analysis support primarily to the Science Mission Directorate. The type of analysis ranges from conceptual to flight project support and from modeling of systems to multi-decadal campaigns. Products are typically used to enable Agency decision-makers to make informed technical, programmatic and budgetary decisions.

Responsibilities

• Lead and/or support a team of analysts to deliver on products: developing work plans, overseeing and managing execution, and providing technical review of products. Through this work, actively provides mentorship to develop team members.
• Works closely with customers to identify, understand, and define expectations in terms of products, resources, and schedule; then leads delivery to those expectations. Owns relationships day-to-day, engaging branch leadership as appropriate.
• Leads and supports systems analysis business development efforts, including identification of opportunities through engagement with customers, development/execution of capture plans, and negotiation of expectations/resources.
• Conducts design, sizing, analysis, and assessments of space systems, missions, architectures, and campaigns, inclusive of benefit, cost, schedule, and risk factors, particularly focused on science mission needs.
• Conducts mission analysis and planning primarily for science missions, leveraging knowledge of orbital/flight mechanics, and guidance and control, to include coverage analysis, probabilistic lifetime analysis, and constellation design optimization.
• Defines and develops math models of space systems, architectures, campaigns, and portfolios to explore, analyze, and assess the design space.
• Elicits and integrates knowledge from subject matter experts and decision-makers to inform design, analysis, and assessment activities through the use of open, transparent, and structured methods.
• Supports establishment and management of contracts, including establishment of contracts/tasks/agreements, monitoring of on-site/off-site work, and evaluation of contractor performance.

Qualifications

In addition to the basic education requirement (shown below), you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

To qualify for GS-14, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level that includes previous technical leadership responsibility (e.g. activity, study, team, project lead); and experience with space science systems (e.g. concept design and analysis, campaign analysis, mission design and analysis, technology characterization and prioritization, mission/campaign affordability, decision analysis).

Education

You must have successfully completed a bachelor's or graduate degree with a major in either a) engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs or b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science, Computer Science*, or other field of physical science.
*Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
