The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is seeking a Sr. Communication Engineer for the Office of Engineering and Architecture (ENGA) to help provide technical leadership to several exciting Communications systems initiatives. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) operate rail, bus, and paratransit services in 1,500-square mile area that includes the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. The successful candidate for this role will be part of the Communications and Network Systems team, which designs various systems such as Fire Alarm, Tunnel Smoke Detection, Access Control, Intrusion Detection, CCTV, Gas Detection, Intercom, and Public Address for WMATA.

The Communications and Network Services team has several exciting initiatives that are focused on updating our CCTV, Access Control, Public Address and Fire Alarm systems with new IP-based technology that will allow our customers enhanced Fire Life and Safety solutions.

The candidate will play a pivotal role in designing, planning, and controlling of design characteristics for an IP based Intercom, Public Address and Audio/Video systems through delivery to customer and provide reliability-based life cycle solutions. The ideal candidate shall be a self-starter, possess strong communication skills, promote team environments and be result- focused. Additional emphasis will be placed on providing direction to cross functional teams who have responsibilities that include integration of system plans, test procedures, system acceptance criteria, transition of assets, State of Good Repair, and life cycle solutions.

In this versatile role, you will bring your passion and expertise in IP Intercom, Public Address and Audio/Video system architectures and implementations to deliver systems designs. This ensures traceability of the design-to-design requirements, drives innovations, and sustainability to increase system reliability performance. You will work along an energetic team of Engineers and will be working in a collaborative environment that values innovative perspectives, continuous learning within the team and across functional collaboration throughout WMATA's departments and stakeholders

Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Electronics, Communications Engineering or Technology or a directly related field, with graduate course work in systems engineering highly desirable. A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible professional communications engineering and analysis experience for a large organization, particularly in the utilization of a wide range of communications and telecommunications systems and procurement of communications systems in a large transit environment.

Experience in lieu of education will be considered if a candidate can effectively demonstrate progressively responsible communications engineering and analysis experience for a large organization, particularly in the utilization of a wide range of communications and telecommunications systems and procurement of communications systems in a large transit environment.

Job Summary/Duties:

This senior engineering position is responsible for communications engineering work and serves as the principal design engineering expert on Communication Systems for the Authority. This position is responsible for analyzing requirements, developing systems to satisfy requirements, preparing procurement strategies, monitoring communication system procurement and approving technical details. This position exercises supervisory responsibility over assigned engineers and consultant activities.

Prepares or reviews on request long range plans for procurement and efficient utilization of Authority communications and low voltage special systems resources, and for their improvement and timely replacement.

Develops design criteria, plans, procedures and methods to be utilized for Authority communications and low voltage special system engineering activities.

Analyzes and evaluates the following in a timely manner: user requirements; develops appropriate programs; and plans projects that will satisfy specific Authority-wide needs for communications and low voltage special systems and equipment.

Develops and prepares or directs the preparation of effective, high quality specifications for design, custom manufacture, procurement and installation of systems and equipment. Ensures availability of logistic support (spares, test equipment, technical documentation and training) for such procurement.

Establishes special developmental engineering programs in instances where custom designed and fabricated equipment is required but not available from standard industry sources. Produces effective original designs to meet unique or highly unusual system requirements.

Develops plans, schedules and detailed designs for changes to existing Authority communications and low voltage special systems, equipment and installations as required.

Represents the Authority in managing communications equipment and system procurement. Directs consultant services in the administration and prosecution of work and ensuring schedule adherence. Coordinates with other offices of the Authority as necessary.

Prepares or reviews, when requested, detailed communications engineering reports, telecommunications business reports, related management and financial analyses, project plans, cost studies, technical standards, claims documentation, quality assurance items and other required documentation. Prepares or reviews, when requested, detailed responses to resolve a wide range of communications and telecommunications related technical, project management, operational or maintenance related problems of various Authority organizational elements.

Maintains awareness of state-of-the-art techniques and a mastery of applicable technology to perform authoritative work in the low voltage special systems industry. Initiates reports and recommendations for improvements to the Authority's systems when appropriate.

Represents the Authority at industry technical conferences and when coordinating with local jurisdictional agencies.

Provides technical supervision to Authority communication and low voltage special systems engineers and technicians as required.

Stays abreast of state-of-the-art technology in the communication and low voltage special systems fields.
