THIS JOB OPENING IS BEING USED TO FILL CURRENT AND FUTURE VACANT POSITIONS IN THIS CLASSIFICATION AT VARIOUS SHIFTS, LOCATIONS AND ASSIGNED DAYS OFF

Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate. Must satisfactorily pass all ASE required tests and required internal certification/promotion tests. Some knowledge of and have performed satisfactorily the duties of an Auto/Light Truck Mechanic or related field for a period not less than two (2) years. Must have any one ( 1) ASE Automobile Certification of A 1, A3, A4, A5, A6, A 7 or A8 or for grand fathered employees they must have passed the required type and number of internal tests.

License:

Valid Commercial Drivers Learner's Permit from jurisdiction of residence is required prior to appointment with proper Passenger, Air Brakes, Tow Truck operations, HazMat and Tanker endorsements. Must acquire a valid Commercial Driver's License with Passenger, Air Brakes and Tow Truck operations, Hazmat and Tanker endorsements by the completion of training.

Ability to satisfactorily complete the medical examination for this position. Must be able to perform the essential functions of this job either with or without reasonable accommodation(s).

Job Summary/Duties:

The employee maintains the Authority's automotive vehicles, to include automobiles, trucks and other gasoline powered vehicles. Employee diagnoses problems, aligns, inspects, overhauls, and modifies automotive vehicles within prescribed manufacturer and Authority guidelines, diagrams and manuals. Employee has considerable latitude for independent judgment and action within established guidelines. Employee completes assignments without close and continuing supervision, and contributes to the resolution of new problems. Employee reports to the lead Mechanic or Shift Supervisor who reviews his/her work through spot checks and occasional checking of results. This is highly skilled and technical automotive repair and maintenance work of a difficult nature.

Employee performs basic to complex maintenance work on WMATA vehicles.

Employee gains familiarity with and develops skills in the operation, maintenance and repair of WMATA vehicles and equipment.

Employee receives instruction and close supervision on new assignments, while regular assignments are performed independently. lead Mechanic or Shop Supervisor reviews and verifies work upon completion to check progress and conformance to established policies and requirements.

Performs tasks in any of several areas of the service vehicle maintenance activity.

Performs major repairs, inspections, adjustments, and maintenance on Authority automotive vehicles in accordance with manufacturers' maintenance instructions, operations manuals, diagrams and schematics. Performs component, chassis and related renovation and installation work.

Diagnoses problems to determine required repairs; recommends corrections to problems not always included in service manuals.

Corrects and adjusts steering geometry of vehicles. Utilizes hand and power tools, precision test equipment, to include test panels, dynamometers, exhaust analyzers, etc., and oxy-acetylene cutting and welding equipment.

Rebuilds components and assemblies; aligns and connects repaired units to related mechanisms; performs adjustments to ensure proper operation.

Lubricates and cleans parts. Observes mechanical systems and devices in operation to detect causes of problems. Performs all tasks in conformance with safety and maintenance practices and procedures.

Utilizes various types of test equipment and related specialized tools associated with job assignment. Performs flame cutting, basic arc or gas welding operations, brazing and soldering as required.

Completes required forms, tags and reports for the operation and maintenance of WMATA vehicles and related components.

Attends on-the-job and formal training classes. Assists higher classified co-workers with assignments or provides job specific training to lower classified co-workers.

Responds to and provides assistance in emergencies such as securing or safeguarding WMATA vehicles and equipment, fire/life/safety, snow emergencies, etc. Operate Authority vehicles as required.

Performs tasks which may include heavy physical labor, maintains cleanliness of work area and performs all other related duties as required.
