Summary

This position is located in the Kidney Disease Section (KDS), Kidney Diseases Branch (KDB), National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), National Institutes of Health. The mission of the Kidney Diseases Branch is to promote fundamental understanding of renal function in health and disease, and undertake research that will improve the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of kidney disease in clinical practice.

Responsibilities

  • Provide expert consultation in matters related to the research process and specific, complex patient populations.
  • Serve as an authority for a specified patient population, independently assessing acute and non-acute clinical problems and toxicities, and appropriately consulting and collaborating with medical and interdisciplinary staff colleagues.
  • Skillfully assesses complex and sensitive health education needs in individual research participant populations with like conditions, studies or other characteristics.
  • Develop plans to address comprehensive research participant needs including education, safety, comfort and spirituality.
  • Provide education to research participants/significant others regarding study participation, participant's current clinical condition, and/or disease process using available resources and modifying teaching methods to the highest level of learning.
  • Develop education plans that creatively and effectively meet individual research participant and family needs and which become the standard for departmental and community use with larger groups of research participants.
  • Identify, evaluate, and communicate patterns and trends that may predict the direction of illness or response to study procedures and provides nursing care to prevent adverse outcomes.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for an Nurse (Research Specialist), GS-0610-12 position you must have:

Education Requirement:

Completed a graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

OR

Completed a Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

AND

Licensure Requirement:
You must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).

AND

You must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

In addition to the mandatory license and education described above under Basic Requirements applicants must have at least one or more full years of professional nursing experience that is equivalent to the next lower grade level. One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: Provide consultation in matters related to the research process and specific, complex patient populations; Serve as an authority for a specified patient population, independently assessing acute and non-acute clinical problems and toxicities, and appropriately consulting and collaborating with medical and interdisciplinary staff colleagues from the specific institute, department or program; Provide support and guidance to less experienced staff; Skillfully assesses complex and sensitive health education needs in individual research participant populations with like conditions, studies or other characteristics; and Develop plans to address comprehensive research participant needs including education, safety, and comfort.
