Summary

This position is part of the Office of Science - Headquarters, Department Of Energy. As a Physicist, you will provide program management for the Heavy Ion research program of the Office of Nuclear Physics in the selection of new research projects and in the continual review of ongoing projects.

Responsibilities

As a Physicist, you will:
  • Serve as Program Manager determining scientific focus and direction in the field of heavy ion nuclear physics research with national/international scope and impact.
  • Examine and ascertain the research needs and opportunities in heavy ion nuclear physics.
  • Prepare, justify, and support the portions of the budget relating to the area of responsibility; propose and implement adjustments to program during the budget approval process and unanticipated developments.
  • Evaluate the suitability and performance of existing research programs at experimental facilities and assesses capabilities, based on peer review and evaluation of scientific priorities.
  • Evaluate contractor, DOE laboratory, and grantee research proposals and performance via own scientific and technical judgment, merit review, site visits/reviews, and panel reviews.
  • Represent DOE in committees composed of agency, interagency and/or non- governmental personnel, identify priority research directions, coordinate research activities on a national or international scale, assess work in progress, and evaluate proposals.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following Basic Education Requirement:

Basic Requirements:

A. Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics.
or
B. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In either A or B above, the courses must have included a fundamental course in general physics and, in addition, courses in any two of the following: electricity and magnetism, heat, light, mechanics, modern physics, and sound.

In addition to meeting the basic education requirements above, applicants must meet the following experience:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-14) in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as: experience examining and ascertaining the research needs and opportunities in heavy ion nuclear physics; coordinates research activities on a national or international scale; developing, coordinating, and organizing recommendations on funding allocations for assigned programs; collaborate with other program managers in developing, implementing, and maintaining a strong, forward-looking national nuclear physics research program.
