Position Information
The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is seeking two (2) Senior Tree Maintenance Workers to maintain Arlington County's public tree inventory and perform skilled, manual tree maintenance work, with responsibility for trimming, maintaining, and removing trees in public areas of the County, including streets, parks, and playgrounds.

The Senior Tree Maintenance Workers work directly with the team of Tree Maintenance Workers and the Tree Maintenance Supervisor to coordinate and perform tree maintenance work, and record resources needed and used.

Specific duties:

  • Acting as a team leader in the field, coordinating workloads of Tree Maintenance Workers during regular hours and afterhours for emergency response and ensuring the crew is following safety precautions;
  • Inspecting trees at job sites and determining the scope of maintenance, pruning trees, removing fallen, dead, and high-risk trees and limbs, and responding to tree-related emergencies and safety issues;
  • Operating and utilizing heavy equipment which includes aerial lift bucket truck, crane truck, dump truck, roll-off truck, bobcat, skid steer loader, mini excavator, stump grinder, woodchipper, chain saws, power pruners, pole and hand saws, blowers, clippers, and hand tools;
  • Scheduling and prioritizing work orders, in coordination with the Tree Crew Supervisor and keeping accurate records of work to be performed, and work orders completed;
  • Training and instructing employees in the use of a variety of specialized equipment, tools and technical procedures;
  • Performing snow plowing or various snow removal tasks;
  • Performing administrative work related to tree maintenance and training, including responding to questions, concerns, and work requests from the public; and
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate will have knowledge of all aspects of tree maintenance and safety procedures involved with tree maintenance, leadership skills to explain rules and procedures clearly to staff, and independent judgement to efficiently and safely plan and perform tree maintenance tasks within a team.

Selection Criteria

  • High school diploma/GED; and
  • Three (3) years' experience performing general tree maintenance, tree trimming, pruning, or related work.
Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:

  • Leading a crew of tree maintenance workers;
  • Familiarity with ANSI standards for tree maintenance;
  • Operating and using tree maintenance equipment; bucket trucks, chippers, stump grinders, and/or power pruners;
  • Working with automated work order system; and
  • Tree maintenance on large trees, typically greater than 20" trunk diameter.
Possession of one or more of the following Certifications/Licenses:

  • Certified Arborist Certification with the International Society of Arboriculture;
  • Intermediate Work Zone Safety Certification;
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) A or B; and
  • CPR/first aid certifications.

Special Requirements
  1. Must possess or obtain a Commercial Driver's License Class A or B within 9 months of appointment to position.
  1. Must possess or obtain an intermediate Work Zone Safety Certification within 1 year of appointment to position.

  2. Employee must have the ability to perform intensive manual labor which involves bending, standing, climbing, stooping, and lifting heavy objects for extended periods and working outdoors in all weather conditions, which is difficult and hazardous, with exposure to considerable heights and various traffic conditions.
  1. Employee will be required to operate a County vehicle to perform assigned duties away from the primary worksite. Applicant must possess or obtain by time of appointment a valid driver license., and authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide, a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record.
  1. A pre-employment background check will be made on all candidates who are selected for employment. It may include checks of the following: drug screening, criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You will be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.
