Summary

The Public Affairs Specialist position is located in the Office of Communications and Public Liaison (OCPL), National Institute on Aging (NIA). The OCPL plans, conducts, and evaluates information activities and programs to inform the general public, health professionals, the media, and stakeholder organizations about the research activities and accomplishments of the Institute.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate development of publications and web content, as well as audiovisual, graphic, and multimedia products for key NIA audiences.
  • Develop press releases, state-of-the-science reports, and other materials about NIA research programs and studies.
  • Foster strong working relationships focused on outreach and communications with journalists, federal agencies, grantees, and other external groups.
  • Advise the lnstitute's senior management and members of the lnstitute's scientific and administrative staff on an integrated program to disseminate the goals and findings of research programs.
  • Devise, implement, and oversee strategies and tactics to enhance communications with key external audiences regarding new and ongoing research initiatives.
  • Develop media pitches, conduct press briefings, and coordinate media interviews with NIA staff.
  • Proactively establish and cultivate relationships with relevant stakeholders in the mass media.

Qualifications

You qualify at the GS-12 level, if you meet the following qualification requirements:

You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: arranging press interviews and press conferences with program officials; researching, writing, and generating press releases, letters to editors, manuscripts, and speeches; developing health information content for digital or print dissemination; establishing and maintaining contact with the media and the general public (i.e., radio, TV, newspapers, magazines, trade papers, etc.); and assuring all press and health information material is factually and technically accurate.

You qualify at the GS-13 level, if you meet the following qualification requirements:

You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: planning and coordinating the dissemination of information relating to the organization's programs through the news media; evaluating and analyzing the effectiveness of communication plans; developing and writing information materials designed to reach national audiences through the news media, web properties, or via stakeholder organizations; and developing and evaluating communications plans to support organizational goals.
