At Appian, we're not only about building awesome software, but also about growing our culture of passion, energy, and innovation. Great people, great software! As a Senior Product Manager, you'll be embedded on a small team of technical staff, interact with key business stakeholders, and own the prioritized product backlog to ensure your team delivers high-quality software with each and every iteration. Your primary customers will be other internal development teams that rely on the core services for which you will be responsible.

What is Appian? Appian is a low-code application platform that lets businesses rapidly build powerful cloud and mobile apps with flexible, visual models instead of clunky custom code. Appian provides full stack automation, uniting humans, bots, and AI workflows. Appian's philosophy of "Data Anywhere" gives our customers the flexibility to integrate data from multiple systems into a single user interface without requiring data migration. All of these differentiators rely on the power provided by the underlying software components that this position will guide and shape from a requirements perspective.

What you'll do: Prioritize, define, and ensure success of backend product features for various users at the roadmap/release level (we release quarterly) as well as the functionality within each feature at the sprint level (two week sprints)
  • Further the development of Appian-patented technologies for high-speed data persistence and retrieval at enterprise scale that abstract complexity to power low-code data and application development.
  • Collaborate with peers and key stakeholders on product vision and strategy.
  • Prioritize what your team should build and when, balancing new feature development, bug resolution, and reduction of technical debt.
  • Present ideas and progress on new features through department-wide and internal team reviews to elicit feedback from stakeholders and peers.
  • Define how features will work and look through close collaboration with engineers in design sessions, mockups, UX review, and usability testing.
  • Write detailed specifications for your peer product managers, developers, and other stakeholders to review and provide feedback on.
  • Manage the release and sprint backlog through planning and backlog grooming, working with squad coaches, engineers, and other product managers as needed.
  • Engage in go-to-market activities-including authoring release notes and presentations that articulate customer value-to ensure the successful rollout of new features.
  • Track adoption and usage of new features, applying appropriate metrics and analytics to evaluate whether they are having the desired impact.

About you:
  • You have a strong technical background, likely as a former software architect or developer who later became a product manager
  • You have a passion for the backend technologies that power enterprise software systems, both proprietary and industry-standard
  • You have a deep understanding of data persistence and reporting capabilities and requirements with respect to enterprise software products
  • You have a strong interest in the scalability, performance, security, observability, and reliability of distributed systems
  • You understand what a roadmap for an enterprise software product looks like and can work with a team to guide the delivery
  • You are imaginative, collaborative, and truly excited about building great product features and experiences
  • You have an ability to empathize with both stakeholders and end users to make the right compromises that can deliver value
  • You have sharp negotiation skills, impressive organization, and superb writing abilities
  • Most importantly, you are passionate about software!
