Full Time
Conducts research under the direction of a Principal Investigator. Works on independent projects - designs studies, collects and analyzes data, and reports results. Independently develops experimental methods and performs data analysis. Responsible for coordinating the analytical, administrative and supervisory functions necessary to manage research programs conducted by the department. Coordinates multiple research studies. Adheres to all standard policies and procedures. Participates in the management and operation of the lab. Oversees the management of lab-related materials, including monitoring cost effectiveness. Directs research assistants and medical students.

Qualifications

Minimum Education
Bachelor's Degree Bachelor's in basic science or related field. Master's degree desired. .

Minimum Work Experience
At least 3-7 years of progressive experience. Supervisory experience preferred. .

Required Skills/Knowledge
Knowledge of statistics and advanced mathematics Proficiency in the use of wide variety of lab techniques, research equipment and research related software Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail Proven ability to communicate effectively with a multi-disciplinary research team Demonstrated experience in laboratory methods such as: gel electrophoresis, PCR analysis, protein purification and DNA purification. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications such as: MS Word, MS Excel, PowerPoint, etc. Experience handling laboratory animals

Functional Accountabilities
Responsible Conduct of Research
  • Consistently demonstrate adherence with the standards for the responsible conduct of research.


  • Maintain confidentiality of data as required.
  • Plan, conduct, and manage research projects within the federal and institutional regulations and policies under the direction of the principal investigator.
  • Responsible for appropriate use of research funds and resources.
  • Comply with all annual job-related training requirements.

Performs laboratory work
  • Perform routine and non-routine tests such as western blots, immunoprecipitation and immunofluorescence as directed.


  • Record and check results for completeness and accuracy.
  • Perform tasks that may require familiarity with techniques and equipment.

Assists with project planning
  • Assist with planning specific research protocols and procedures.


  • Coordinate schedules of tests and procedures.
  • Assist in the development and troubleshooting of new techniques and ideas.

Plans research projects
  • In conjunction with Principle Investigator, modify methods and protocols.

Formulate and perform complex laboratory experiments, and analyzes and reports the data
  • Formulate and defend hypotheses.


  • Elaborate on design and execution of experiments that could test these hypotheses.
  • Develop methods and protocols to implement the experiments, including gel electrophoresis, PCR analysis, protein purifications, and DNA purifications.
  • Make detailed observations and keep an accurate laboratory notebook.
  • Present and discuss work at weekly laboratory meetings and national symposia.

Supports project management

  • Maintain awareness of deadlines and plan appropriately for upcoming staffing and project needs.


  • Plan for completion of projects on time.
  • Train and mentor new staff as needed.
  • Assist with determining work assignments, schedules and priorities.

Maintains Data
  • Develop and modify databases as needed.


  • Collect, codes and compile statistics (coding of data requires interpretation of data from a broad range of alternatives).

Promotes internal and external customer relations:
  • Respond to both internal and external requests in an effective and friendly customer service manner.
