This Direct Hire position is located in the Office of Protection Services, Smithsonian Institution. The incumbent serves in a variety of mobile and fixed posts that are crucial to the protection of Sl property, staff, and visitors; where threats and vulnerability to exhibits are high; where exhibits contain high value; and in areas that contain sensitive assets or artifacts.

Responsibilities

As a Security Guard, the incumbent is responsible for the following but not limited to:
  • Ensuring the safety and security of the Smithsonian staff and visitors and protecting the Smithsonian treasures, property and grounds.
    Patrols assigned areas to check locks, alarms, door exhibit cases and other barriers.
  • Conducts routine inspections to ensure compliance with security/safety requirements.
  • Provides customer service to museum visitors and staff members.
    Prepares various written accurate, clear and readable reports such as offenses, accident reports, complaints, and maintains logs.
  • Assists victims during medical emergencies and request assistance from senior staff members.

Physical Demands: Work may require physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, crawling, and similar activities and lifting and carrying of heavy objects of 50 pounds or less, such as two-way radios. Must be physically able to pursue, subdue, apprehend and detain individuals.

Incumbent is required to qualify annually (at a minimum) with the standard security force firearm (handguns, rifles and shot guns), OC Spray and ASP Baton. The incumbent must be able to wear and be able to employ all issued weapons while on duty. Must obtain and maintain CPR and AED qualifications. Failure to re-qualify will result in removal from the position.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you possess 6 months of general experience and 6 months of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-03 level in the Federal service or comparable pay band system. For this position Specialized experience is defined as:
  • General Experience: Experience such as administrative, technical, clerical, military, or other work that involved following written procedures, rules, or regulations in contacts with coworkers, supervisors, or members of the public to provide a service, respond to inquiries, or obtain information.
  • Specialized Experience: Experience such as work with a Federal, State, municipal, local, or private protective organization that involved the protection of property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident, or trespass; or maintaining order and protecting life. Such experience must have provided a knowledge of protective systems and techniques. Acceptable experience includes service in the Armed Services or Coast Guard that involved the performance of guard duties on a regular or intermittent basis. For Security Guard positions in a hospital setting, experience as a psychiatric nursing assistant or a similar position safeguarding patients is qualifying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education: 2 years above high school.
