About the Position: This position is located at the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE) in Bethesda, MD. The NICoE helps service members and their families manage traumatic brain injury (TBI) and/or psychological health (PH) conditions through cutting-edge diagnostic evaluations, comprehensive treatments, outpatient clinical care, family education/support services, and high-quality research. Treatment plans help promote healing of the mind, body, and spirit.

Responsibilities

  • You will serve as a primary care provider in the capacity of a certified Physician Assistant (PA), providing a wide range of primary health care to patients with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).
  • Perform comprehensive physical examinations.
  • Order diagnostic tests and interpret results.
  • Diagnose and treat illnesses, injuries, and diseases.
  • Write prescriptions to patients.
  • Refer patients to other physicians or clinics, as necessary.
  • Educate patients on health issues.

Conditions of Employment

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
  • Two year trial/probationary period may be required.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position requires the incumbent to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
  • This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

In order to qualify, you must meet the you must meet the education, certification/licensure, and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Education: Graduation from a physician assistant educational program, accredited by the Accreditation Review Committee on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessors, at a college, university, or educational institution that is accredited by an accrediting body or organization recognized by the Secretary, U.S. Department of Education. Note: You must upload your transcripts with your application package.

NCCPA Exam: Applicants must have successfully completed of the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) examination; must maintain status as a certified physician assistant, including completion of all requirements for Continuing Medical Education (CME) and re-certification. Note: You must upload a copy of your NCCPA Certification letter with your application package.

License: Applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician Assistant from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Note: You must upload a copy of your license/registration with your application package.

Exemption: You are exempt from the license requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0603 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before. Note: You will be required to provide appropriate documentation to the respective Human Resources Office to validate your status.

In addition to meeting the basic requirements above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Experience: Applicants must demonstrate a minimum of one full year of work experience in their resume as a certified physician assistant equivalent to the next lower grade level, GS-11, and demonstrate completion of an accredited physician assistant educational program. Experience includes the following: assessing/evaluating, diagnosing, and treating patients in an in-patient and out-patient setting; interpreting results from lab and/or diagnostic tests; and prescribing medications for patients. Note: Experience treating patients with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is preferred, although not required for referral purposes.

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Education
