Minimum Qualifications

E ducation
  • High school diploma, or equivalency certificate (GED), and satisfactory completion of an acceptable vocational school and/or training course in Mechanics, or related field.


Twelve (12) months following the achievement of a particular grade level (i.e. Grades C, B and A) , an incumbent may be advanced to the next grade level provided he/she has taken and passed any required written or practical tests, acquired any required certifications and has met acceptable fitness for duty, work record and job performance requirements.
  • Level C
    • One (1) year of experience as a Mechanic Helper (Entry Level), or related role or related role and/or military occupational specialty code (MOSC) for military experience in related field
  • Level B
    • One (1) year of experience as a Mechanic Helper (Level C), or related role
  • Level A
    • One (1) year of experience as a Mechanic Helper (Level B), or related role

  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain a Motor Vehicle Operator's Permit issued from the jurisdiction of residence
  • Ability to successfully complete an entrance level examination
  • Ability to satisfy proficiency level requirements within 90 days of appointment

  • In accordance with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) this job has been identified as critical to mission essential functions. Incumbents in this role may be required to report to or continue to work in the event of authorized office closings or service suspensions due to severe weather, natural disaster, fire, operational emergencies or related events.


The Mechanic Helper (PI), performs work in the Rail Car Periodic Inspection area. The incumbent is accountable for locating minor malfunctions and performs routine, repetitive maintenance tasks on electronic, electrical, electro-mechanical, mechanical and air conditioning equipment. The scope also includes operations in a prescribed sequence, using designated applicable diagrams, manufacturer's specifications, equipment manuals, and appropriate regulatory codes. Assignments are within specified instructions, detailing results expected, time limits, and acceptable quality in a shop/field environment.

Job Levels : At each successive grade level of this job (i.e. Grades C, B, and A, the incumbent is expected to demonstrate increased, distinguishing levels of proficiency and efficiency in knowledge, skills and abilities when performing the assigned duties and essential functions described in this job description

Essential Functions
  • Performs routine repairs, inspections, inspections, cleaning, testing, lubrication, adjustments, and maintenance tasks on rail equipment in the Periodic Inspection area, using detailed and specific maintenance and repair procedures.
  • Provides assistance to mechanics who are performing work of a more difficult or complex nature.
  • Uses precision measuring equipment, such as meggers, micrometers, verniers, flow meters, pressure gauges, and other devices to perform periodic inspections work, as required.
  • Operates equipment and authorized tools under close supervision, and in compliance with proper operating and safety guidelines.
  • Cleans equipment, components, and tools prior to start of inspection/repair work, and prior to returning such apparatus to the appropriate storeroom. Obtains required parts/special tools from storeroom, as instructed. Applies paint, decals, etc., to assemblies, as required.
  • Operates an Authority vehicle, and responds to emergency situations, as required.
  • Assists in maintaining cleanliness of work area in a clean and orderly manner. Performs tasks which may include heavy physical labor.
  • Works variable hours, and in inclement weather conditions, as required.
  • Participates in formal classroom and on-the-job training programs.
