Responsibilities

  • You will visually inspect for external damage and operational deficiencies, wet and dry pipe system components.
  • You will inspect fire pumps and fire pump system components for damage and visually apparent operation deficiencies or impairments.
  • You will perform main drain test on all water based suppression systems.
  • You will perform priming water, low air pressure, and quick-opening device tests on dry pipe systems.
  • You will respond to all levels of trouble calls.
  • You will maintain special hazard foam suppression systems including flushing lubricating and adjusting control valves, piping and nozzles.
  • You will maintain and install sprinkler systems.
  • You will maintain and replace fire pumping systems.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Element for this position is Ability to do the work of a Plumber without more than normal supervision, which includes: 1) Maintaining, testing, troubleshooting, repairing fire sprinkler systems in accordance with local regulations and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) instructions; 2) Using blueprints, sketches, and specifications to detect malfunctions and complete assignments; and 3) Using practical mathematics to make calculations, such as pipe size, area of coverage, and flow rate. This announcement uses the Certain Personnel of the DoD direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

You will be required to obtain and maintain the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) Level I certification within 12 months of entry into the position and NICET Level II certification within 24 months of entry into the position.

A 40-hour work week is typical for this position.

Recruitment incentives may be authorized to eligible new hires.

A relocation incentive is generally a single payment intended to offset some of the relocation costs experienced by the selectee. A relocation incentive may be authorized.

You may be required to serve as an on-call duty mechanic on a rotational basis. An on-call duty mechanic is required to carry a duty cell phone and duty pager and must remain available to respond on site to after-hour emergencies within two hours.

You may be assigned to perform tasks in non-trade related fields as an assistant/helper as workload requires.

You may be designated as ALPHA/Essential personnel and required to report for duty or held in a duty status to provide support before, during, and/or after special emergency situations, such as, but not limited to destructive weather, disasters, or periods of an increased security threat.

This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.

This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Moderate lifting up to 40 pounds is required. If a heavier lift is required, it must not be attempted without assistance. Must be able to work at a rapid pace for a short period of time. Occasionally required to perform work by stooping, bending and reaching while in cramped and uncomfortable positions and by walking, kneeling, crouching and crawling. Must be able to climb ladders and scaffolds to perform work at various heights. Normal vision is required.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Some work is performed outside and may require exposure to prevailing weather conditions. Working conditions in this position vary with a portion performed in relatively pleasant surroundings and a portion on rooftops, in equipment rooms, under buildings, and in confined spaces. Subject to perform work in areas with high noise levels where ear protection is required. Working in very hot and cold environments, poorly ventilated and lighted areas is occasionally required and in some instances work in these conditions is for the duration of the shift. The incumbent may be exposed to fumes, dust, dirt, grease and oil, and is subject to the possibility of scrapes, cuts, bruises contusions, burns, electric shock and eye hazards.
