Summary

The GS 12 Senior Clinical Social Worker is assigned to a PTSD Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program (PTSD-IOP) at the Perry Point division and will provide treatment services to Veterans diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), trauma spectrum disorders, and co-occurring disorders. The incumbent provides evidence based psychotherapy for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and case management to Veterans in the PTSD-IOP.

Responsibilities

The Senior Social Worker will be responsible for conducting professional evaluations, making recommendations for treatment planning, and implementing treatment interventions for a wide array of Veterans in an intensive outpatient treatment setting.

The incumbent will provide subject matter consultation to colleagues and students on the counseling process within various specialty areas, build on the foundation of competence through regular meetings and discussions to explain assignments, review progress of cases, and confer about the counseling perspectives and orientation.

The incumbent will provide complex crisis intervention and stabilization to patients who are in psychological distress. He or she will also establish treatment goals through a collaborative process with the patient utilizing advanced counseling skills.

The incumbent will primarily deliver individual trauma focused Evidenced Based Therapy (3-4 times a week to an individual patient), and will occasionally provide group or family counseling interventions, while simultaneously demonstrating sensitivity to diversity through use of multicultural counseling skills.

The incumbent will conduct mental health assessments, utilizing DSM criteria in making diagnoses and formulation of treatment goals and application of appropriate clinical intervention using professional counseling practices.

Incumbent must possess the knowledge and ability to independently complete psychosocial assessments and diagnostics.

Incumbent possesses the skills to offer psychosocial interventions and measures outcomes to interventions.

This Senior Social Worker will develop and deliver psycho-education groups (e.g., life skills, family support, community integration, etc.) and will use evidence-based treatments for PTSD.

The incumbent will provide general case management and develop a therapeutic rapport with Veterans in the PTSD-IOP.

The incumbent will involve families as frequently as possible.

The incumbent will participate in monthly residential chart reviews, compile resulting data, and submit data to program management.

The incumbent will provide clinical services as part of the Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education: Have a master's degree in social work (MSW) from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school of social work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work.
  • Licensure: Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level. For this grade level, applicants must be licensed at the advanced practice level.
  • English Language Proficiency: Social workers must be proficient in spoke and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j.
Grade Determinations: Senior Social Workers have experience that demonstrates possession of advanced practice skills and judgment. At least two years should be in an area of specialized social work practice. Senior social workers must be licensed or certified by a state at the advanced practice level which included an ASWB advanced generalist or clinical examination, unless they are grandfathered by the state in which they are licensed to practice at the advanced practice level (except for licenses issued in California, which administers its own clinical examination for advanced practice). Senior social workers may have certification or other post-masters training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship or equivalent supervised professional experience in a specialty.

In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the professional KSAs listed below:

1. Skill in a range of specialized interventions and treatment modalities used in specialty treatment programs or with special patient populations. This includes individual, group, and/or family counseling or psychotherapy and advanced level psychosocial and/or case management.

2. Ability to incorporate complex multiple causation in differential diagnosis and treatment within approved clinical privileges or scope of practice.

3. Knowledge in developing and implementing methods for measuring effectiveness of social work practice and services in the specialty area, utilizing outcome evaluations to improve treatment services and to design system changes.

4. Ability to provide specialized consultation to colleagues and students on the psychosocial treatment of patients in the service delivery area, as well as role modeling effective social work practice skills.

5. Ability to expand clinical knowledge in the social work profession, and to write policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines pertaining to the service delivery area.
