Summary

This position is in the Department of Health and Human Services, Food and Drug Administration, Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, Office of Analytics and Outreach, Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Staff which provides comprehensive statistical and bioinformatics support to all internal and external regulatory and research-related activities, including study design, analysis, and participation in the development and application of regulatory standards and compliance activities.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as an expert Computer Scientist, technical authority and advisor related to software engineering and its application to bioinformatics, whole genome sequencing, big data, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and other relevant domains.
  • Serves as a senior advisor and member of a team of computer scientists that design, develop and/or modify existing software to help solve routine and novel scientific computing problems.
  • Participates in conferences and meetings of professional groups concerned with the application of bioinformatics and computer technologies.
  • Prepares written reports and oral presentations describing developed systems and the general application of information technology to research for publication and for use by management.

Qualifications

The position of Computer Scientist falls under the 1550 occupational series. To qualify for this position at grade GS-14, you must meet the following:

Basic Requirements


Bachelor's degree in computer science or bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus. All academic degrees and course work must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions.

Minimum Qualifications

Specialized Experience. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.
  • You must possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 in the Federal service that includes experience: applying the theoretical foundations of computer science principles, concepts, methods, standards, and practices to develop and interpret policies, procedures, and strategies; providing technical advice, guidance, and recommendations to resolve complex computer technology capabilities and problems; and using statistical software and computer programs to perform computer analysis of statistical data and findings.
