Summary

Goddard Space Flight Center is seeking a Planetary Formation & Early Solar System Processes Scientist to lead studies of planetary body formation and evolution, including objects in other solar systems. You will develop instrument and mission concepts that will be proposed to NASA opportunities, as a well as apply for funding for the study of the formation and evolution of planetary bodies, particularly the interactions with the Sun and space environment with the surfaces of such bodies.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts research on the origin, composition, structure, and evolution of the bodies of the solar system, including the planets, their satellites, the Earth and Moon, meteorites, asteroids, comets and dust.
  • Presents research results at workshops and conferences, as well as publish results as peer-reviewed publications in journals.
  • Develops, leads, and submits proposals to secure funding for personally performed research and any supported students/postdoctoral researchers.
  • Submits proposals to NASA research programs, announcements of opportunity, instrument development opportunities, and Goddard internal opportunities for funding. Supports proposals as a Co-Investigator for both Goddard-led and external proposals.
  • Supports NASA activities, including serving on review panels, supporting NASA events (both public and internal), action teams, and other requests from the Center or NASA HQ.
  • Develops models for the formation of planets and moons.
  • Participates and/or leads the development of instruments and instrument concepts.
  • This vacancy has been amended to extend the closing date to 7/23/21.

Qualifications

In addition to the basic education requirement (shown below), you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

To qualify for GS-13, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level leading research into the formation and early evolution of planetary bodies, including the Moon, planets, and exoplanets to leverage existing data of planetary surfaces and interiors, including insights gained from the study of planetary materials; experience in the development of instrument and mission concepts that would address fundamental science questions related to the formation, evolution, and interaction of planetary bodies with the space environment.

Education

You must have successfully completed a bachelor's or graduate degree with a major in either a) engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs or b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science, Computer Science*, or other field of physical science.
*Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position.
