Job Announcement

The Fairfax County Health Department is a progressive public health leader providing services that promote population health, protect public health and the environment, and ensure residents' equitable access to health services and information.

Under general supervision, this position works as part of the Health Services Division serving as a Public Health Nurse float pool, assigned to cover staffing needs in Health Services programs. Health Services programs may include a Public Health clinic, field sites (e.g. client home visits), schools, adult day care centers, communicable disease responses and within the community to cover staffing and/or operational needs. Obtains health histories, identifies health needs, and develops health plans. Interprets results of screening tests, provides health education and provides referrals to community resources as needed. Provides care coordination in schools or community setting. Must have a strong working knowledge of computers and effective communication skills. Collaborates with team members and partner agencies as needed to improve the health of the community. Must be accessible for assignments Monday through Friday.

These are non-merit G-Status temporary positions. Cannot exceed 900 hours per calendar year. Appointees is not eligible for benefits and does not earn paid leave or holiday pay.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from a college or university accredited by the National League for Nursing or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education with a bachelor's degree in nursing; plus one year of work experience in a public health/community health setting; or two years of full-time post-licensure experience as a nurse in an equivalent health care setting whose focus was primarily prevention services and community education.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

Possession of a current license or a multistate licensure privilege to practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Selected positions or area(s) of assignment may require the incumbent to possess a valid motor vehicle driver's license.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a Child Protective Services Registry, a driving record check, a tuberculosis test, and a sanction screening to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Two years of post-licensure experience working as a registered nurse in a public health/community health setting.
  • Experience with phlebotomy and immunization skills.
  • Experience providing home visits and/or long-term care or adult day care centers.
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Adaptable to flexible scheduling and ability to work independently.
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative connections with internal and external partners.
  • Strong interpersonal abilities to communicate effectively and clearly with a diverse population.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite and other software applications.
  • Bilingual skills a plus.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Employee is required to walk, stand, sit, bend, kneel, reach, climb stairs and carry equipment or young children up to 25 pounds in weight. Uses hands to grasp, handle or feel. Visual acuity is required to read data on a computer monitor. Ability to operate keyboard driven equipment. Ability to drive a vehicle. Position frequently communicates and must be able to exchange accurate information with others verbally and in writing. All duties perform with or without reasonable accommodations.
