Job Announcement

Provides paraprofessional legal support to the General District Court and the Diversion First Initiative, through legal research, legal case file review, drafting legal documents, application of legal policy and code, and management of interns to support the General District Court judges. Performs legal and factual research for judges to develop sound policy and procedures for program development and implementation. Works un der the general supervision of the General District Court Clerk of Court, Director of General District Court - Court Services Director and the Chief Judge or designated Judge . Specific duties include but are not limited to:

  • Performs case specific research and drafts detailed memoranda to assist judges in making more timely and well-informed decisions on court cases.
  • Communicates effectively orally and in writing with tact and diplomacy.
  • Researches defendant bond status and detainers to determine if legal criteria has been met for bed to bed transfers, improving connection to treatment, defendant's health, and reducing the jail population.
  • Compiles records from medical and legal sources and assesses for expedited docketing to reduce jail days served when appropriate.
  • Acts as a liaison between the court and legal, medical, treatment, and veteran communities to ensure critical information is shared and deadlines are met.
  • Coordinates for cases on specialty dockets and for bonds, temporary detention orders, and Mental Health non-compliance docket.
  • Collaborates with judges, Clerk's Office, Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney, Office of the Public Defender, court appointed attorneys, the Office of the Sheriff, the Community Services Board (CSB), CSB outpatient centers and state hospitals.
  • Drafts and prepares orders and obtains necessary documents for competency evaluations and reviews with attorney the requirements for statue compliance.
  • Tracks and monitors time-sensitive case documents received from treatment and out-patient centers for appropriate and timely court action.
  • Prepares legal documentation to transfer defendants from various mental health facilities and/or detention facilities for court proceedings.
  • Evaluates case information and ensures legal representation is assigned to ensure due process and that defendants' legal rights are protected.
  • Ensures confidentiality and protection of sensitive medical record data according to law.
  • Prepares correspondence, drafts legal orders, and specifically contempt of court orders for Judge review, service of process, and adjudication to ensure compliance with court orders.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to the following: graduation from an accredited college or university with an associates degree in paralegal or legal assistance studies or closely related field; plus one year of experience as a paralegal or legal assistant.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Not applicable.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Good working knowledge of the legal process.
  • Direct experience working in a law practice or court setting.
  • Experience preparing legal documents and performing legal research.
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience.
  • Excellent customer service and communications skills (verbal, written, and presentation).
  • Experience in the use of Microsoft Office computer software, especially Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Paralegal certification .

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to the position must satisfactorily complete a criminal background check.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Job is generally sedentary in nature; however, there is sitting and standing, frequent walking, and occasional bending and twisting. Visual acuity is needed for viewing court documents and computer monitor as well as dexterity and ability to operate keyboard driven equipment. Employee may be required to lift up to 15 pounds. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
