Job Announcement

This announcement will be used to fill multiple positions at various sites across Fairfax County.

Assists in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of outcome-based programming for Fairfax County older adults. Programming focuses on inclusive recreation programs, educational and lifelong learning programs, technology programs, community service projects, volunteer programs, community trips, health and wellness programs, community trips, cultural programs, and special events. Works as a member of the regional team to implement region-wide projects and activity strategies focused on obtaining specific outcomes for older adults to reduce at-risk behavior across centers. Assists with the following: coordinating, organizing and promoting adult and senior programs and services; telephone reassurance and referral to appropriate resources; supervision of volunteers and part-time staff; maintenance of statistics and records; and collecting fees and depositing funds to financial institutions on a weekly basis. Directs daily operations of older adult programs in the director’s absence. Facilitates and coordinates safe building usage. Facilitates involvement of adults and seniors with disabilities and assists in implementation of modified and adapted activities for older adults that function at varying levels.

This position requires day, night, and weekend hours.

Illustrative Duties

General Duties
  • Plans, coordinates, schedules, supervises, and evaluates the operations and maintenance of the assigned facility or facilities;
  • Hires, trains, supervises, schedules, and evaluates staff;
  • Plans, schedules, and conducts specialized on-site staff training;
  • Completes and submits various financial, administrative, and statistical reports;
  • Identifies, recommends, and writes justifications for budget components such as capital equipment submissions;
  • Adheres to revenue and expense limits, goals, and guidelines for specialized areas of supervision;
  • Authorizes purchase requests and invoices for payment;
  • Inspects facilities and grounds for safety hazards and operational deficiencies, recommends improvements, and initiates corrective measures;
  • Responds to public inquiries and concerns;
  • Participates in the development and implementation of community outreach plans to target underserved populations and to increase overall program participation;
  • Analyzes and evaluates service in terms of individual and community needs;
  • Performs administrative functions at a facility, including budget preparation, recruitment of volunteer staff, maintenance of records necessary to the operation and evaluation of center programs, and report preparation.

Programming
  • Plans, organizes, supervises, and schedules specialized activities and programs sponsored by the park, recreation, teen, community, or senior center in cooperation with residents and related agencies;
  • Schedules, coordinates, and evaluates class, camp, and tour programs held at parks, centers, schools, government facilities, and private vendor locations.


Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of recreation center and /or park management;
  • Knowledge of fiscal record keeping and inventory procedures;
  • Ability to use a personal computer, applicable software and peripheral equipment;
  • Ability to direct and coordinate the work of subordinate staff and volunteers;
  • Ability to plan, develop, and administer recreation programs or community activities;
  • Ability to maintain effective relationships with employees and citizen groups;
  • Ability to prepare a variety of administrative reports;
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.


Employment Standards

MINIMUM STANDARDS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:
Graduation from an accredited two-year college or university with an associate degree in recreation, park management, therapeutic recreation, or a closely related field; plus two years of related experience in recreation center, park, athletic field, golf course operations, or community-based program coordination or a related field, as applicable to the position. CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
  • Valid driver's license
  • CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications (Required within 3 months)
  • Food Handler Certification (Required within 3 months) - Training provided by the agency.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a Child Protective Services Registry, and a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • College-level course work in recreation, gerontology, social work, or related field;
  • Bilingual ability;
  • Experience assisting with the development and implementation of appropriate recreational activities in a community center, senior center or recreational program; working with adult and/or senior program participants and volunteers
  • Therapeutic Recreation experience or prevention-orientated recreation programs working with adult and geriatric populations with disabilities.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work performed in a center environment. Job may require standing, running, jumping, etc., to demonstrate recreation activities. Must communicate with others. Employee may be required to lift up to 15 pounds and drive a vehicle. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
