Summary

The Bureau of Economic Analysis is seeking a highly-motivated and capable executive to serve as the Associate Director for Regional Economics.

This position is a Senior Executive Service (SES) career-reserved position. Positions in the SES are not graded. SES pay is commensurate with qualifications. SES employees are eligible for bonuses and awards based on performance. Veteran's preference is not applicable to SES.

Responsibilities

The Associate Director for Regional Economics will:
  • Direct and coordinate the activities of the Regional Economics Directorate by developing recommendations for plans, programs, and policies for BEA's Director which will ensure that the Bureau presents an accurate, up-to-date picture of the economic position of the U.S., states and localities.
  • Conduct the economic analysis associated with the regional program and evaluate the effectiveness of that analysis. Undertake special analytical projects of a complex nature - intra-Bureau, interagency, and intergovernmental - that utilize regional measures to break new ground in the interpretation of developments in regional economies.
  • Guide the application of economic accounting concepts, statistical techniques, and economic theory to extend and improve the system of regional economic accounts and other tools of regional economic analysis.
  • Represent BEA at conferences, on committees, and at other meetings with top-level representatives of business organizations; regional, Federal, state, and local government groups; research foundations and educational institutions with interest in the current business situation and economic trends.
  • Serve as the principal advisor for the Regional Economic Program to the Director, and participates with the Chief Economist, and the other program managers in planning the data collection, analysis, and economic research carried out by BEA.

Professional and Technical Qualifications (PTQs):

PTQ #1- Experience demonstrating the ability to manage a substantial economic research and statistics program.

PTQ #2 -Demonstrated experience in the conceptual and methodological aspects of economic accounting and statistics, including data estimation, analysis, collection, and compilation.

PTQ #3 -Demonstrated thorough knowledge and expertise in economics gained through education, or work experience in the field of regional economics.

Education

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Degree: economics, that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting, or calculus. OR

Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in economics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Additional information

Financial Disclosure: This position is covered under the Ethics in Government Act, which requires comprehensive financial disclosures from employees. The appointee will be required to file a Public Financial Disclosure Report (SF-278), within 30 days after his/her appointment, and then annually thereafter.

Qualifications Approval and Probationary Period: Persons newly selected for career appointment to the Senior Executive Service must have their executive core qualifications approved by an Office of Personnel Management Qualifications Review Board and will be required to serve a one-year probationary period.

Mobility: Individuals selected for Senior Executive Service positions may be subject to reassignment across geographical, organizational, and functional lines.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.
