Summary

The Smithsonian Institution is a diverse museum and research complex dedicated to the increase and diffusion of knowledge. This position is located Collections Processing Unit (CPU), Collections Department, Collections, Archives and Logistics Directorate, National Air and Space Museum (NASM). This position assists with handling, storing, shipping, transporting, maintenance, preservation and exhibition of artifacts apart of National Collections.

This position is INSIDE the bargaining unit.

Responsibilities

  • Performs tasks of a technical nature in support of collections management
  • Works with a crew of museum technicians and specialists that are responsible for the packing, handling, moving, transporting, storing, and monitoring of artifacts such as airplanes, helicopters, aircraft engines, missiles, cannons, guns, spacecraft, satellites, spacesuits, uniforms, art, and other related aeronautical and space objects, many times serving as the team leader for such projects.
  • Routinely makes use of the museum's computerized Collections Information System. This includes creating specific artifact databases, adding information to those databases, and assisting the curatorial departments with other areas of the database.
  • In preparation for storage, shipping, transportation or exhibition, the incumbent must disassemble, assemble, load, unload, secure, crate, or cradle aforementioned types of artifacts. These tasks require the incumbent to construct cradles, dollies, and other supports necessary to ensure safe handling, movement, and storage of the artifacts
  • He/she oversees and performs all types of artifact handling operations, including de/installations, which require the operation of trucks, hoists, forklifts and similar equipment.
  • He/she articulates and communicates to the team the assignment, project, problem to be solved, actionable events, milestones, and/or issues under review, and deadlines and time frames for completion.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation. Applicants who have the 1 year of appropriate specialized experience, are not required to have general experience, education above the high school level, or any additional specialized experience to meet the minimum qualification requirements.

For this position, applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, GS-07, in the Federal Service or equivalent.

For this position, specialized experience is defined as: working in a museum environment caring for and cleaning; cataloging; creating and enhancing digital collection records; utilizing collection database to assist with digital assets management; preparing, compiling, and transmitting reports; performing collections processing by: packing, handling, moving, and storing of aforementioned types of artifacts utilizing equipment such as forklifts and dollies; and disassembling, assembling, loading, unloading, securing, crating, cradling, or creating containers/mounts for artifacts.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid work on the same basis as for paid experience. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. To receive credit for such experience you must indicate clearly the nature of the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the average number of hours per week spent in such employment on your online resume.

Note: Your specialized experience must have been in a position(s) equivalent to duties for the occupation at the next lower grade level for the position being filled as defined by applicable Federal standards.

Education

Education can be used as a alternate to specialized experience for this position. Applicant must have 2 full academic years of progressively higher level graduate education or master's or equivalent graduate degree related to the position if he or she would like to use this alternative.

How You Will Be Evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above. The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:
  • Knowledge of accepted museum collections management methodology and practices related to small, medium, and large aeronautical and space related artifacts
  • Knowledge of museum object handling and storage standards for a widely varied aeronautical and space artifact collection.
  • Ability to use specialized computer programs to input artifact related data into the collections information database.
  • Skill in the use of stationary and power hand tools used in the preservation, storage, moving, or transporting of artifacts.
  • Skill in operating material handling equipment, such as forklifts; scissor lifts; Aerial Work Platforms and similar equipment.
  • Ability to communicate in writing for the purpose of writing and documenting physical descriptions of artifacts or digital material in accordance with procedures and established standards and communicating with staff within and outside the unit.
