The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's (WMATA) Department of Access Services (ACCS) is seeking an Accessibility Compliance Advisor.

We are looking for someone who is passionate about providing accessibility to people with disabilities, who can provide advice and assistance to all Metro departments in response to external inquires. The perfect candidate for this role will develop and maintain strong communications with internal stakeholders to ensure WMATA colleagues are aware of any accessibility issues, new ADA regulatory matters, and/or possible improvements to the system. The successful individual will have the relative expertise to review documents for 508 compliance.

Utilizing their excellent customer service skills, the incumbent will serve as WMATA's ADA Ombudsman to ensure prompt investigation and responses to accessibility related complaints, and maintain records of such complaints. WMATA is required to be in full compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act as well as state and local accessibility standards.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Transportation, Law, Information Technology, Public Policy, Business or related field

Experience
  • Minimum three (3) years' experience in Accessibility Compliance, Customer Support with accessibility aspects, ADA Legislative Review, Accessibility Policy Development or related experience

Certification/Licensure
  • N/A

Preferred
  • Master's degree in Transportation, Law, Information Technology, Public Policy, Business or related field

SUMMARY

The Accessibility Compliance Advisor is responsible for advising the Director of ADA Policy and Planning (ADAP) and other Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) officials on matters concerning regulatory actions of federal, state, and local governments as it relates to accessibility at WMATA. The incumbent is accountable for identifying and escalating potential obstacles that affect people with disabilities and, serves as the WMATA ADA Ombudsman and Section 508 Compliance Monitor.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Develops and maintains strong communication with internal stakeholders, to ensure WMATA colleagues are aware of any accessibility issues, new regulatory matters, or possible improvements to the system.
  • Serves as WMATA's ADA Ombudsman to ensure prompt investigation and responses to accessibility related complaints, and to maintain records of such complaints.
  • Serves as Section 508 Compliance Monitor, continuously testing and monitoring as well as receiving internal and external feedback related to WMATA's digital accessibility via phone, email, public meetings, web screening and accessibility conversion software.
  • Develops and maintains ongoing communications with external disability community stakeholders in order to gain insight into actual and potential accessibility issues with WMATA services, and to establish a positive public perception of WMATA accessibility agenda and accomplishments.
  • Provides advice and assistance on accessibility regulatory matters to the ADAP Director and all Metro departments in response to external inquires. WMATA is required to be in full compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act as well as state and local accessibility standards. This function is required to help WMATA remain in compliance using online access to resources, housing, applicable laws, regulations, and standards.

OTHER FUNCTIONS
  • Seeks opportunities to introduce new accessibility technology, continuously improving the accessibility and experiences of internal and external stakeholders by way of the Internet, meetings and webinars.
  • Submits a monthly accessibility report during WMATA Accessibility Advisory Committee meetings to provide the disability stakeholders with regular updates on WMATA accessibility efforts, and to respond to specific complaints or concerns raised during AAC public meetings.
  • Serves as a member on the ADA Eligibility Appeals Panel to review and adjudicate appeals by customers denied eligibility for MetroAccess service or the Reduce Fare Program by way of In-person hearing, and or conference call hearings.
