Job Description

The Washington Post is looking for a Senior SEO Engineer to improve the search rankings of our critical content initiatives. This person will make recommendations and be able to implement those recommendations in our rendering and delivery tiers. They will consult with the newsroom on keyword strategy and link building. Diplomatically engage leaders in other departments in order to implement your recommendations. This person will research and analyze competitors, and should be aware of tools to do this.

  • Lead efforts to solve complex SEO problems, moving quickly to implement ideas and deliver results
  • Perform technical SEO audits, investigate into logs and make relevant recommendations, both technical and editorial
  • Educate and train stakeholders who can help you achieve your goals
  • Provide regular reporting and benchmarking for our website and distribute findings to leadership and other teams as needed.
  • Dive into issues and incidents as they occur, help resolve or escalate them and drive them to resolution
  • Drive product discussions (e.g. vision, goals, tenets, roadmap, narratives, status) with executive representatives, creating product materials and training where necessary.
  • Stay abreast of updates in search engine algorithms, competitive landscape and the industry to develop winning strategies

  • Quantitative test driven field experience.
  • Firm understanding of SEO best practices and Google quality guidelines.
  • Proven ability to identify and troubleshoot onsite issues impacting site performance.
  • Working knowledge of html css, js development and constraints
  • Experience optimizing cdn and origns configs
  • Experience in working with onsite, technical, content, video and social media optimization.
  • Understanding of technical SEO with the ability to communicate with onsite developers and engineers.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organization with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Stellar interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knows how to use search data as a tool for content development, content marketing, and audience acquisition.
  • Efficient worker with great attention to detail
  • Experience with web analytics tools (Google Webmaster Tools, Google Analytics, Botify, etc.)
  • Advanced knowledge of SEO methodologies and best practices, including and not limited to markup, meta and rel tag configurations, pagination, URL behavior, and crawl efficiency improvements.
  • Proven success in creating and implementing SEO plans and strategies resulting in tangible growth in organic traffic.
  • Experience working with cross-platform teams to implement SEO strategies.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, HTML and understanding source code.
  • Experience with JIRA and Confluence a plus
