Job Description

The Title I Science Instructional Specialist provides supplemental science instruction and coaching support at John Adams Elementary School. This position offers the opportunity to have a profound and lasting impact on student learning and achievement. The Instructional Specialist transforms science instruction by improving teacher content and pedagogical knowledge and supporting teachers by offering feedback on planning and implementation of engaging and rigorous science lessons. This position reports to the Principal.

  • Education: Bachelor's degree; Master's degree preferred.
  • Certificates & Licenses: Valid Virginia Department of Education license with an endorsement in Elementary Education, or eligibility to obtain one.

Essential Functions:

Instructional Capacity (Approximately 50%):
  • Provides targeted professional learning opportunities to teachers by:
    • Providing clear and direct feedback;
    • Modeling exemplary lessons, instructional practices;
    • Leading science content and pedagogy professional learning workshops;
    • Connecting teachers with professional development resources.
  • Provides teachers with access to science equipment and instructional resources to ensure the implementation of engaging hands-on science lessons.
  • Collaborates with other ACPS staff and departments to further support the implementation of the ACPS science curriculum, including curricular and professional development design.
  • Attends meetings and ongoing training as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Lesson Planning Support and Non-Evaluative Teacher Observations (Approximately 40%):
  • Reviews and offering feedback on science lesson plans for K-5 teachers.
  • Observes teacher practice through classroom walkthroughs. This would include 30-minute observations of the implementation of science lesson plans across K-5th grade levels.
  • Writes detailed feedback to accompany each observation. These will include evidence observed and suggestions for growth.
  • Conducts one-on-one post-observation conferences with all observed teachers which allow the opportunity to dialogue about specific areas of development.
  • Maintains detailed records.

Student Assessment and Data Analysis (10%):
  • Assists in the implementation of assessment systems and protocols for elementary school science including common assessments, benchmarks, and other assessments.
  • Collaborates with school staff to analyze student data (including SOL, benchmarks, and common assessments), create data reports, and develop and train on protocols for teachers' use of data.

Collaborates with staff to implement interventions based on science assessment results.

  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
  • Tuberculosis Skin Test.
