This is an announcement for multiple available Lifeguard I and II positions on the Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center Team. The Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking to hire multiple positions in advance of the center opening in summer, 2021.

Head Lifeguards (Multiple Positions)
The Head Lifeguards at the Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center are responsible for the management and operations of the water safety program. These positions work 40-hour weeks to serve as the AM and PM supervisors of the lifeguard staff, and will hire, train, and manage all lifeguards in the center. The Head Lifeguards will be responsible for supervising permanent part-time lifeguards, and temporary lifeguards. Additionally, these positions will be responsible for ensuring the safety of all aquatic participants and creating a life safety program that will be followed throughout the facility. Positions may act as lifeguards in the stand, or serve in an administrative role during their shift, depending on need.

In addition to serving on-deck, lifeguards will be asked to fill out daily, weekly, and monthly safety reports. Positions will be asked to organize trainings for the lifeguard staff; and create the lifeguard staff schedule.

Part-Time Permanent Lifeguards (Multiple Positions)
Part-time permanent lifeguards are responsible for working 20-hour work weeks to serve as on-duty lifeguards at the Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center. This pool of positions will serve as the primary guards in the facility and will monitor two bodies of water including a 50-meter pool, and a leisure pool with a water slide and other play features. Lifeguards will serve on deck or in lifeguard chairs and will serve as the primary protection against water related injuries. Lifeguards may be scheduled to work morning, afternoon, evening or weekend shifts.

About Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center
The Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center has something for everyone. For those looking to fuel their competitive side the new facility includes a 50-meter pool with 1-meter, 3-meter, and 5-meter diving, a whirlpool, and two bulkheads to create more opportunities in the pool. The 50-meter pool is FINA compliant for long and short course competitive swimming, water polo, and synchronized swimming. On the other side of the facility, the fun never stops in the family pool. This pool includes a splash pad for tots, a water slide, 4-25-yard lap lanes areas for swim classes and lessons, in-water volleyball & basketball, and a lazy river.

On dry land, the Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center includes an 8,000-sf. fitness center with a variety of cardio and fitness equipment. There is a fitness studio, three community rooms, and two wet-classrooms for fitness classes, parties, and gatherings. Outdoors this new development includes 10.5 acres of new parkland for casual use, the extension of the esplanade, and outdoor space for festivals and special events. Selection Criteria
Head Lifeguards:
Minimum: High school diploma or equivalent and current CPR/AED Certification, American Red Cross Lifeguard and Water Safety Training Certification or equivalent plus considerable experience in recreation/sports and facility management. Lifeguarding for the Professional Rescuer Certification or ability to obtain. American Red Cross Water Attraction Credential for Lifeguards or ability to obtain.

Part-Time Permanent Lifeguards:
Minimum: High school diploma or equivalent and current CPR/AED Certification, American Red Cross Lifeguard and Water Safety Training Certification or equivalent plus some experience in recreation/sports and facility management. Lifeguarding for the Professional Rescuer Certification or ability to obtain. American Red Cross Water Attraction Credential for Lifeguards or ability to obtain.

Head Lifeguards and Lifeguards:
Substitution: Additional directly related experience can substitute for the education requirements on a year-for-year basis.

Desirable: Preference may be given to applicants with one or more of the following:

  • Strong knowledge of lifeguarding and best practices related to pool safety;
  • Considerable experience working as a lifeguard in a recreational or competitive pool setting;
  • Considerable experience managing or scheduling staff;
  • Considerable experience creating a water safety program;
  • Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) or Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certifications;
  • Experience managing recreational facilities and programs in a local government setting;
  • Strong knowledge of RecTrac or similar web-based scheduling, registration, and payment system; and
  • Experience managing a large and diverse staff.
