Job Description:

The Assistant Principal (AP) supports the Principal in leading the instructional program and ensures its alignment with division regulations for curriculum design and assessment. Provides and promotes a state-of-the-art curriculum and superior instructional delivery for the success of all students. The AP supports the school and works collaboratively with the principal to maintain the educational programs, consistent with community characteristics and school division goals and practices. This job is a direct report to the school Principal.

ECC houses 24 classrooms including 9 Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI), 6 Early Childhood Special Education classes, and 1 Preschool Autism program, as well as 8 Campagna Head Start and VPI classes. This unique center brings together many Alexandria City Early Childhood stakeholders for collaboration and inclusive professional opportunities that foster student growth. ECSE and Preschool Autism programs serve students ages 2-5, while VPI serves students who will enter Kindergarten the following year, and Head Start serves children ages 3-5. Family engagement is crucial and we connect with our families through home visits, family nights, principal's coffees, and volunteer opportunities.

The School Division. The ECC is a member of the Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) in Alexandria, Virginia. The school division serves more than 15,500 students who hail from 114 countries and speak 119 languages. ACPS includes one pre-K school, 12 elementary schools, two middle schools (Grades 6-8), one K-8 school, one Prek-8 International Baccalaureate School, and the acclaimed T.C. Williams High School. Qualifications:

• Education: Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree preferred.

  Certificates & Licenses: Valid Virginia Department of Education license required, or the ability to obtain one.

  Experience: Minimum of 3 years teaching experience.
  
  • Administrative and teaching experience related to working in socio-economically and culturally diverse school settings.
  • Demonstrated expertise in evidence-based curriculum design, assessment, and instructional practices.
  • Documented experience in leading secondary educational program development and implementation, including professional development in evidence bases best practices for diverse student populations.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience necessary to work effectively with students, teachers, administrators, families, and community members.

Essential Functions:

The candidate for this position assists the principal with:

• Selecting, assigning, orientation, and evaluating staff.
• Developing, supervising, and evaluating the instructional program.
• Preparing the school budget and the master schedule.
• Formulating and implementing professional development activities.
• Interpreting and enforcing Board policies and regulations as well as school mission and goals.
• Supervising the use and maintenance of facilities and evaluating custodians.
• Supervising and coordinating student discipline and welfare.
• Contributing to the school mission and goals to provide a positive learning climate and supportive community environment.
• May be assigned other tasks and responsibilities as may be required for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment for the school and division.
