Job Description

The Senior Product Manager, Web and API Delivery sits at a critical nexus in the Washington Post's core reader experience portfolio. In collaboration with a team of Core User Experience product managers that leads product development across the website, apps and distributed platforms, this product person would drive the development of our key technical product: the site infrastructure, back-end services and publishing pipelines that distributes thousands of pieces of content from our 1,000-person newsroom to millions of readers and subscribers every day. This invisible system is key part of the Post's technical backbone, requiring stable uptimes and centralizing business logic at scale so we can continue to deliver news to our readers every second of the day.

In this role, you will use user feedback and data to build a long-term, strategic roadmap for our delivery product. You will work in an Agile development environment to proactively remove obstacles and deliver on product and business strategies. In collaboration with product, engineering, and other stakeholders, you will develop recommendations for improving the scalability of our foundation to deliver impactful user-facing experiences to our readers worldwide. 

The Engineering team you'll be working is familiar with Python, Flask, Celery, Kafka, Nginx, Mongo, AWS, ECS and Docker.

This position could be 100% remote in the US for the right candidate.

What you'll do
  • Create, manage and evangelize a strategic roadmap for The Post's web and API delivery products
  • Engage with the product and engineering teams to identify, validate and execute on key roadmap initiatives that align with company objectives
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to gather requirements, prioritize the backlog, and plan sprints that result in meaningful improvements for your users.
  • Coordinate product release activities across multiple teams, driving internal team coordination and clear communication
  • Describe, demo and document key technical features our delivery system as subject matter expert
  • Set product KPIs and partner with engineering and analytics to ensure product performance is properly monitored and that dashes and alerts are accurate and actionable.
  • Utilize data and research to generate actionable insights and identify opportunities to evolve your product area and development processes to meet user needs.


Minimum qualifications
  • 4+ years of combined experience in product management and web engineering in digital media or consumer-facing digital applications
  • Ability to think critically and solve problems in an agile, fast-paced environment while maintaining strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work well across disciplines and build partnerships that result in better product outcomes
  • Exceptional communication, writing, and presentation skills that allows one to build alignment across engineers, designers and senior leadership.
  • Experience using quantitative and qualitative data to identify user needs and inform solutions
  • Experience with or strong interest in digital media and news
  • Deep experience with delivering content and commerce experiences at scale
  • General knowledge of CDN configuration, web origins, WAF rules, AWS, HTTP and front-end web development
  • Familiarity with RESTful API Design

Preferred qualifications
  • Working knowledge of industry standard software such as Microsoft Excel, Google Docs, Jira, Confluence
  • Experience collaborating with large, remote teams using communication tools such as Slack and Zoom
  • Detailed knowledge of or experience with Akamai or another CDN such as Cloudflare, Fastly or Cloudfront
