Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking a Product Designer to join its Product Design team. This team of UX, UI, visual designers and creative technologists leads design strategy and visual approaches for The Post's suite of digital products, including washingtonpost.com, our native iOS and Android apps, email, internal publishing tools, and paywall and account management experiences.

In this Product Designer role, you'll focus on the UX, UI, branding, and visual design of our email newsletter experiences. Our newsletter content is published to millions of subscribers daily. The ideal candidate will have passion for designing email newsletter experiences and working with developers to build out across a variety of email platforms and clients. The role will include day-to-day collaboration with newsroom editors, engineering teams, and both news and product designers.

You'll be part of a team of more than twenty-five designers. You'll collaborate with product managers and internal stakeholders across multiple teams to identify, ideate and propose new approaches to help redefine email newsletter experiences from The Washington Post.

Here's what you'll be working on:
    • This role will be responsible for designing email experiences across multiple email platforms
    • Close collaboration with UX and design minded developers
    • Troubleshoot email campaigns across multiple platforms and email clients
    • Perform day-to-day email production activities including email campaign design, testing, deployment, and monitoring
    • Design rule-based email templates that integrate personalized dynamic content elements
    • Propose new A/B tests to improve our KPIs
    • Creating innovative experiences across our email newsletter product suite
    • Designing and presenting mockups, wireframes, sitemaps, user flows, and prototypes that adhere to user-centered design principles and email standards to produce high-quality visuals, from concept to execution
    • Working with other designers to establish style guides, standards, and design systems
    • Partnering with engineering, newsroom, and product leadership to ideate and create new features and experiences in our email newsletters
    • Work on the entire lifecycle of the product: research, user flows, prototyping, high fidelity comps, and collaboration with engineers on implementation
    • Identify opportunities for improvement in our products and process by leveraging your design experiences, email best practices and user insights to recommend solutions

This ideal candidate for this role:
    • Must be hands-on with design for email newsletter experiences
    • Has experience with graphic design, UI design, typography, and editorial design in digital platforms and email
    • Constantly looks for ways to optimize our products and experiences
    • Loves to collaborate closely with colleagues in research, product management, engineering, newsroom and non-technical partners
    • Is organized, driven and excited about designing and developing for email
    • Can clearly and passionately articulate the thinking behind a design
    • Is energized by problem-solving and loves to develop solutions for difficult problems
    • Enjoys gathering user and project requirements to create conceptual wireframes, prototypes, and final designs for user-facing experiences
    • Is familiar with the always evolving landscape of best practices for email newsletter design and industry innovations
    • Loves designing through collaboration with partners across newsroom, engineering, and product management
    • Understands the capabilities and constraints of designing for email
    • HTML and Javascript development knowledge is a plus

    You have:
    • A portfolio that shows a strong body of work including outstanding visual and user interface designs, and cross email client development
    • 3+ years of design experience designing and developing for email platforms
    • An established track record of producing business results through design
    • A collaborative spirit and a proven ability to work well with others, building strong partnerships across teams
    • Comfort with design and prototyping software like Figma, Sketch, the Adobe Creative Suite, Invision, and Principle
    • Experience with or strong interest in digital media and news
    • A pure love for email design!
