The Washington Post is looking for a deputy editor for By The Way , our award-winning travel site that features local City Guides from around the world, essential travel tips and breaking travel news.

We're seeking an experienced editor who thrives on collaboration and is comfortable working across departments in a fast-paced news environment. The ideal candidate will have strong news judgment and a track record of generating and executing innovative and original story ideas.

The deputy editor will edit news, travel tips and City Guides for distribution on our site, in our weekly newsletter and on Instagram . The editor should be comfortable pivoting quickly from editing utility travel advice and feature stories to breaking news. The ideal candidate will not only have an eye for what makes a compelling story but also for identifying emerging trends as we help readers navigate the new normal of travel as we emerge from a global pandemic.

This editor will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations while working with staff reporters and contributing writers. Duties will include assigning and editing content, managing story budgets, curating our weekly newsletter and monitoring analytics. The ability to cultivate a strong network of reliable and diverse contributors is imperative.

The ideal candidate will think creatively about how we deliver journalism to new audiences and be able to execute ideas using both text and visual story forms. Previous management and travel-journalism experience is a plus.

The Post strives to provide its readers with high-quality, trustworthy news and information while constantly innovating. That mission is best served by a diverse, multi-generational workforce with varied life experiences and perspectives. All cultures and backgrounds are welcomed.

This position is based in our Washington newsroom. Once we resume normal operations in September, it will not be eligible for remote work.

Candidates should submit a résumé and a cover letter outlining how you would approach this role (as pdfs) to our jobs portal by July 6. All application materials can be uploaded to the same field. The cover letter should be addressed to By The Way Editor Amanda Finnegan and Managing Editors Tracy Grant and Krissah Thompson.
