Responsibilities

This position is located within the Department of Program Services (DPS), Probation and Pretrial Services Office (PPSO), Program Oversight Branch of the Program Oversight and Support Division. The incumbent will provide overall support to the system, and to program services.

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Serving as a team lead for reviews of probation and pretrial services offices, which includes following the office review protocol, demonstrating knowledge of operational policies and procedures, making findings and recommendations to judges and court unit executives, and conducting appropriate follow-up with the office being reviewed.
  • Tracking and evaluating program data, including trends on findings and recommendations, referrals for and delivery of technical assistance and training, and the timeliness and comprehensiveness of action plans and status reports submitted by the offices reviewed.
  • Developing guidance and coordinating with staff in other areas to provide supportive training and assistance to the probation and pretrial services offices regarding specialized program areas, and the use of evidence-informed supervision practices for both pretrial and post-conviction supervision.
  • Evaluating individual cases for compliance with national policies and procedures.
  • Responding to inquiries and correspondence from Congress, the Department of Justice, and the public related to policies and procedures of the federal probation and pretrial services system.
  • Serving on PPSO policy-making groups, and applying knowledge related to pretrial services, presentence, and post-conviction supervision functions.
  • Serving as an authority regarding probation and pretrial services policy and procedures, participating in policymaking working groups, and serving as a point-of-contact for the probation and pretrial services office.
  • Responsible for serving as the sentinel event subject matter expert, which includes, communicating with stakeholders and the development and coordination of sentinel event case analyses and reviews.

  • You will be required to serve a trial period if selected for a first-time appointment to the Federal government, transferring from another Federal agency, or serving as a first-time supervisor. Failure to successfully complete the trial period may result in termination of employment.
  • If appointed to a temporary position, management may have the discretion of converting the position to permanent depending upon funding and staffing allocation.
  • Relocation expenses may be provided, but only if authorized by the Director of the AO.


  • Qualifications

    Applicants must have demonstrated experience as listed below. This requirement is according to the AO Classification, Compensation, and Recruitment Systems which include interpretive guidance and reference to the OPM Operating Manual for Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions.

    Specialized Experience : Applicants must have at least one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience which is in or directly related to the line of work of this position. Specialized experience is demonstrated experience participating in reviews of probation and pretrial services offices, tracking and evaluating program data, developing guidance and coordinating technical assistance.

    Education

    The basic qualifications can be met in one of three ways:
  • Degree in behavioral or social science, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
  • Combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.
  • Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrates that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.
