Summary

This position is located on Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (BARC), Research Support Services, Beltsville, MD.

The incumbent will administer farming services by planning and evaluating planting and harvesting strategies agricultural crops; manage controlled climate facilities (greenhouse or growth chamber); oversee feed mill operations including diet formulation; develop/oversee farm equipment maintenance program; and review and assess farming data.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize AI or smart technology and other software and interfaces used to perform farming processes to improve production yield.
  • Coordinate and provide oversight of all plant care, plot operations, forage and feed production, feed preparation, field and plot farming activities.
  • Use management strategies to operate feed mill including approaches to combat pest control, ensure sanitation, and schedule delivery of raw products for processing feed.
  • Track farming data, such as crop yields, crop rotations, utility usage and GPS information.
  • Oversee composting of animal waste of large agricultural animals.
  • Develop budget and administer fiscal principles to formulate long- and short-term plans and objectives.
  • Use electronic/statistical software to analyze data the status of farming targets and plans to prepare and present written/oral reports or establish long term plans.
  • Use of variety of analytical methods to determine soil, grain, seed, forage and feed regimen quality.
  • Develop specifications to purchase/lease required equipment, materials, and maintenance contracts.
  • Develop guidelines and specifications for purchase of seed for use in field and cover crop management as well as nutrient components used in the preparation of animal feed.
  • Develop and maintain farm equipment and facility maintenance program for the equipment.
  • Oversee greenhouses and growth chambers operation.
  • Establish agronomic strategies that includes nutrient and environmental management.
  • Collect information on grain commodities to analyze market for the sale of grain and manage revenue (packet funds).

While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. The responses to the questionnaire and your resume should be in significant detail to provide the person rating your application with a good understanding of your ability to do the job, technical knowledge, work, and training experience, etc. (For example You must have the ability to lead or supervise as a General Operations Supervisor (Farm Management), (Screen Out)). Working Conditions:
Some of the work is performed in an adequately lighted and climate-controlled office, but also may include facility shop, and worksites. Frequent visits to research field sites and plots, greenhouses, and other related sites are required.
Reasonable care must be exercised around operating equipment, animal facilities and quarantine facilities. May occasionally be in areas that contain biohazardous materials such as animals infected with zoonotic organisms, radioactive isotopes, and carcinogenic chemicals. Proper safety procedures must be observed, and proper protective clothing and equipment are required.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Required Documents
