Summary

This position is located in Smithsonian Institution's Office of Smithsonian Facilities (SF), Office of Facilities Management and Reliability (OFMR). The incumbent for this position serves under the general supervision of the Automotive Mechanic Supervisor. The employee is responsible for providing repairs on motorized equipment, trailers and miscellaneous off-highway equipment belonging to the Smithsonian vehicle fleet.

Responsibilities

WG-8
  • Makes repairs that can be accomplished by removing, replacing, adjusting, and/or cleaning defective parts or components such as fouled spark plugs, worn brake shoes, water pumps, engine gaskets, and belts aid hoses.
  • Tears down and rebuilds components and assemblies by fitting and installing needed parts such as rings, pistons, bearings, and gears.
  • Provides road service.
  • Performs repairs to major components and assemblies such as engines, transmissions, and differentials.

  • Inspects, services and repairs motorized equipment, i.e., automobiles, tractor-trailers, coach buses, air-brake equipped vehicles, alternative fuel systems, hydraulic systems, automotive computerized systems, all electric and hybrid electric systems.
  • Performs the full range of journeyman-level work which includes inspecting, servicing and repairing mobile equipment and automotive vehicles work includes major overhaul and repair of end items, major assemblies or components such as engines (gasoline, diesel, hybrid electric, or plug-in hybrid electric(PHEV)), transmissions (automatic, manual or transaxle cross drive), power train assemblies, suspensions, turbo chargers, brakes, steering and other components of engineering, mid-level construction and off-road class of mobile equipment such as all- terrain vehicles (ATVs), snow plows, snow blowers, generators, riding lawn mowers, salt spreaders, sweeper brooms, lift gates, electric winches, tracked-wheel/skid-steered equipment, and tracked loading equipment, cargo vehicles, trucks, buses, forklifts, and bulldozers or other equipment.
  • Performs complex diagnostic and repair procedures on all gas, natural & propane gas, hydraulic, electrical, and computerized and diesel mechanical systems in small or heavy vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintains vehicle records by recording services and repairs in the Fleet Management Information System (FMIS).

Physical Requirements:

Work requires standing, stooping, bending, stretching, crawling under vehicles, and working in tight spaces or tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts parts and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds. Occasionally lifts items 50 pounds or more with mechanical devices or with assistance from other workers.

Additional Requirements:

The incumbent may be required to work late shifts, weekends and holidays and is subject to being called in for emergencies to restore the Smithsonian Institution to normal operations.

Must possess a current CDL License Class B.

How you will be evaluated:

  • ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF AN AUTOMOTIVE MECHANIC WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION.

  • If an applicant meets the screen-out element, the following Job Elements will be evaluated:
  • Knowledge of equipment assemblies, installing, and repair, etc.
  • Knowledge of technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic).
  • Ability to use measuring instruments.
  • Ability to interpret instructions, specification, etc.
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems (e.g., finding the cause of the problems in automotive vehicles).
