Job Description

The Washington Post is looking for an accomplished Deputy Editor who will lead our prestigious editorial board and help shape the overall direction of the Editorial Department. You will serve as the primary support system and sounding board for the Editor, Editorial & Opinions on both strategic and day-to-day issues. You have extensive journalism experience across a variety of beats and topics and have held impactful editor roles that honed your ability to edit skillfully on deadline while managing a team of respected writers. You are in sync with the values espoused by the editorial board, including its long-standing support of human rights and civil liberties.

Responsibilities
  • Lead editorial board meetings to discuss top global and domestic issues, facilitate decisions regarding the board's position on topics for publication and advise on assignment decisions.
  • Set a clear vision for the culture of the editorial board team and maintain that vision.
  • Identify and execute appropriate responses to corrections and mistakes while preserving the integrity of the editorial board's reputation.
  • Bring thoughtful insights to high-level strategic discussions and meetings with executives. Maintain and cultivate connections with sources to inform those insights.
  • Evolve our editorials to resonate with new audiences and experiment with new platforms.
  • Identify inefficiencies and areas for improvement on the editorial board team and more broadly across the Editorial department.
  • Own the hiring process for editorial board roles, ensuring cultural fit and working with the HR team to maintain equitable hiring practices.
  • Own compensation decisions for your team, including merit raises, market adjustments and performance appraisals.
  • Oversee the selection of letters to the editor and political cartoons.


Qualifications
  • 10+ years of experience in journalism across writing and editing roles
  • 5+ years of progressively complex managerial editing experience
  • Strong ability to coach and mentor a team
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills
  • Ability to communicate at all levels of the organization
  • Sharp copy-editing skills
